are brabanters a "real" chicken breed?

They are a real breed and could certainly be shown. That said, they have not yey been admitted to the the Standard and as such could not progress furthe than Best of Breed in a show. Showing non-standard breeds & varieties is how interest is generated leading to eventual admission to the Standard. Two years ago Marans were not in the Standard but were being shown. They are now in the Standard.

Takes several group of breeders to successfully show and get it accepted in the standard. We have too many of them being inferior or not enough people showing Brabanters. We got a long ways to go!

thanks so much. I think when I say "real" I mean SOP and not a hybrid. But it sounds like these are in the middle. A developing breed, non hybrid, but not SOP yet. Is that correct? I am trying to learn the correct terms so that I don't offend people.

I wish the old or imported Brabanters didn't get mixed in with the Polish or Spitzhaubens back in those days but hatcheries want to make money so they HAD to increase the numbers so that is why they did it.

We all have to work on the SOP and do the BEST you can in what you have. Get it as close as you possibly can. Cull out the ones that is persisent or know the trait is dominant or just downright a fault you do not want to pass down to future offsprings. If we keep it up in twenty years, we should see consisency and hopefully the Brabanters and Spitzhaubens will be admitted into the APA of SOP section.

Breed and CULL HARD!
