Yes for me. The first day I saw the cutest little chicks at a ranch store I fell in love. Mine have names, are cuddled, and despite the poop are good pets. My family liked the chicks but now they like the eggs better :).

I would say YES! The health and well being of our flock always come first along with the rest of our family. They are well loved and we enjoy seeing them happy. They get fresh whey, mealworms, produce, fruit, home made yogurt, hen scratch and apple vider vin in their water every week. If that's not love, then I don't know what is!! LOL When times are tough in the world like they are right now they provide us with fresh eggs and meat. They are an important part of our homestead and are a wise investment. :)

The best pets ever! My girls are very sweet and mild mannered and love to follow us around the garden. My toddler just loves his girls, and they don't mind him at all! He chases them around saying baka baka baka! (he hasn't caught one yet though!) They should start laying in the next few weeks, and I'm sure we'll love them even more once we start collecting eggs.

For me they are pets. yes we get the extra bonus of eggs but even after that stops they will still be my girls. I get way to attached & i don't see them any differently than i do any of my other animals.

They can be. You can actually get them to the state that they like people. I have four in particular that are more friendly them the rest. One (Dayday), she is not very fond of being touched or held, but still love to sit by me and talk. Another (Chichi), likes to sit by me and talk, and will occasionally jump on my shoulder/head (when I'm not paying enough attention to her). The third (Maroon), absolutely loves to sit on my lap and get petted. The other, will sit on my lap if it hasn't already been taken over by Maroon & my cat. She is the only who really lets me pet her when she not on my lap (the others just start walking away slowly if I touch them.) So basically, mine are very much pets :D

Yes pets, I love my chickens, I love how they chat with me and carry on like they're telling me all about their day. They will never be killed for food ever. I care more about them then I do the eggs, they will have a home till they die of old age. I do like the eggs tho.

My chickens are pets. They aren't as close a pet as my dogs, but they certainly don't qualify as a business venture. If it is its running at a loss!! The last 5 hens I took in were from a friends laying flock. They are older ladies who don't lay as often and were getting beat up by the other 70 hens. I watch their progress and am pleased that their feathers are growing back. I'm happy if I get 2 eggs a day from my 11 hens, 2 roosters and a turkey. That's pets.

Mine are pets and my hobby. I think they may be getting too domesticated though. Every time I walk into the run, I get mobbed!!! My kids named each chicken, but the chickens named me as well. My name is King Snacktime!

My chickens all have names and I talk to them everyday, it's a little sick that I named to sweet and sour but I don't think I could bring my self to eat them. In fact the 3 new ones I got don't lay eggs. I want to learn as much as I can about them so I can raise chicks in the spring.

My husband calls my chickens my therapy. A couple of years ago I was getting over a medical problem and the chickens kept my mind on them most of the time. They were so much fun to watch.
My first "batch" of chickens were 2 Plymouth Rock (1 turned out to be a rooster), 2 RIR, 4 Americaunas (1 was a rooster). The Am. rooster was beautiful and very protective of his hens. He took a dislike to our grandson. After he chased our grandson through our orchard we gave him (the chicken) away to a neighbor. The other rooster had to be dispatched when he threatened me. I say I could eat one of them, but so far haven't. I have a little chicken graveyard going.
I guess the neighbor wouldn't take the grandson, huh?
