My chickens are not pets, they are livestock just like anything else with the exception of the dogs. Nothing becomes a pet when it is eventually going to become dinner. I do have my favorites but that is where it ends.

We left the door open a bit yesterday (accidentally), and we come back in and the kitchen is full of chickens

They are so sweet and definitally pets!

As far as cost effective (eggs equal cost of feed) and one day they will be dinner......they are loved, cared for and treated with care and respect. They have names and yes, all have characters....but, I dont know if pets is the right word. My cats and dog are pets and they cost me money.... they wont be dinner when "the time comes".

Dont know how to answer that one!!

These are pets however I do have my favourites. Mystic is tops.
The best thing about them is the fresh eggs unlike my 3 pet budgies.

My Plymouth Rocks are called Henny Penny and April (I purchased them April 2011)
My others are Pekins and their names are Snowdrop, Pearl, Opal, Ivory (1 white with black specs 3 white ) Mystic, Magic (lavender) Beartha, Meggan (chocolate) Helain (partridge) Peggy (porcalain) Coral, Jessegga (black speckled).

I am waiting until next year before I purchase a few more and have already got names for them.
Layla, Olay

They are great in my garden where they keep the weeds down from under my hedges and shrubs. Free range all day along with my two rescue rabbits. Lovely to watch in the garden.

I've always wanted chickens, but originally just for eggs and because I love being around animals of all kinds. When I started raising them however, I fell in love with all of them! Some are much friendlier than others, but I love every one of my birds as much as I love my dogs and cats.
