You know they are your pets when you have a dream they are sick and wake up sad! (Me last night, probably from reading about lethargic chickens right before bed!)
That's terrible! My favorite rooster... has bumblefoot.. he's so old. 4 years! I don't wanna lose him! I see him as the best pet a person could have.

Pets here. They make me laugh every day. Quite frankly, I had no idea that chickens would have such great personalities. The eggs are a bonus, but some of my ladies don't lay, so it's hard to say they are livestock. We would never think of "culling" them no matter how much we threaten to send them to "freezer camp". They are just too beautiful and funny to be anything but pets.

4 years is not 'so old' I have a 5 year old rooster, and have heard of someone with a 13 year old rooster! He's got plenty of time yet. Treat that bumblefoot ASAP!

Mine are definately pets for me and for my grandchldren and great grandchildren. I have 26 hens that all come running when I go into their chicken yard or coop. I just bought another 20 that are about a month old. For the first time I have some bard rocks. I did not know they were such friendly chickens with so much personality. I am going back tomorrow and buy 5 more. My excuse is that I know one of them is a rooster -- he doesn't have the physical signs yet but that boy has attitude! I give eggs to my friends and the food bank and would never think of eating one of my girls.

My chickens are definitely pets. More like my babies... they are amazing! They jump up on my lap and snuggle and trill when they are really comfy. They are excited to see me each day and give me tremendous joy. I can't wait 'til they're all laying eggs! My Orpington is the one who likes to snuggle the most at this time. Still working with them everyday. They are very good about being handled as I have had to put triple antibiotic some of them. I am truly amazed at their personalities and wish I could have more. I believe chickens can be both pets and food... as for mine... beloved members of the family.

A message to those that responded, and any that find pleasure in following ...

In the few weeks since this thread was started, it's become buried beneath those so many others in which I'm constantly dealing w/ the emergencies and diseases that folks encounter, and the desperation and pain of their circumstances. And, once all else is done? I click on this one, just for the simple joy of readin' your answers ... well ... and to 'shake off' all that suffering, I reckon.

I just wanted to thank y'all for that, and I'm gonna go thank Iron Chicken for startin' it right now ~'-)
