Are chickens the new black?

Monroe farm and feed (right next to the Monroe fair grounds) has a fresh batch of BO right now. So if you're going to the show tomorrow, stop in there, they open at 8 am I think.

We got our BOs today, had to stalk a little mom and pop farm supply store to get them, but man, they're cute! And compared to the 1 1/2 week olds in the next brooder, they are tiny! I can't believe how fast they grow.

experiencing the same thing here in Oklahoma. Within about two days even the big chain feed stores are sold out. Its funny. We have told more of our neighbors that we have chickens this year and they all seem to be excited, some to get eggs from us and some actually interested in possibly keeping a flock of their own. Its very strange. We just knew people in the suburbs would frown on it. People's outlooks are changing, that's for sure.

Our only hen left from last year got noisy yesterday and by the time I got out there to shush her I saw a neighbor across the street peeking over his 8 ft fence to find where it was coming from. I waved, he waved and laughed a bit. Not sure if that is a good thing or bad.....

Where are you in OK, here in Muskogee tsc still has chicks, but they don't seem to be advertising- Orchlens is only getting them on Fridays and by 3 in the afternoon they are gone...

Hello neighbor! I called B-ham feed stores last year to make sure they were getting chicks. They were generally like "well, yeah..." I assume that they're not used to non-farmers calling? I dunno. Too bad my circumstances have made it impossible for me to get chicks now. Though I guess it would be hard to find them!

I also LOVE the name of this thread!

Our local TSC said they normally sell out completely within 2 hours of getting the chicks. I bought 3 Buff Bramhas today from a post on craigslist... they got 9 emails almost immediately after posting!

Chickens must be the new black because my uber fashionable teenager thinks they're cool!

*shrug* our feed stores order from Freys, so though you need to get your orders in early... they don't carry chicks onsite. i don't see any new chicken owners much around here, usually farmers and small holdings buying more chicks... but its illegal to keep livestock or poultry on a rural residential property here oddly enough.
