But be aware that you will almost certainly get OCD, the backyard chickens version of OCD.

They don't take showers and they sleep in their poop. If sammy exists on your property, and you handle the birds, Its to late anyway. You'll get the poop's and be healthier for it.
I seen a CDC study once that said that the healthiest kids come from farms. So, don't suck your thumb and wash your hands.... you'll live...

I learned the hard way. Still recovering from a bout of Salmonella. I am 99% sure I caught it while working on nesting boxes in the coop as I smoked a cigarette. Chicken poo and feathers mixed with hand to mouth cigarette=very very sick.

smoking is now banned around chickens and I carry antibacterial gel in my pocket while I work. Lesson learned. Salmonella is not something I want to ever get again!

We loooooove all kinds of creatures! We have several different potentially-illness-causing pets....look at my signature line, plus pets we have had in the past (lizards, frogs, etc). I'm not a germa-phobe, but I always tell my kids to wash their hands after playing with the pets, and especially before eating. We've never gotten sick from our furry, feathered, or scaly friends.

It occurs to me that my last post was too flippant.

I wash with plenty of soap and water after I clean the coop, collect eggs, or handle the chickens. I wash the eggs before I let them touch my kitchen counters or refrigerator. Isisranch is right, salmonella is not something you want to suffer through.

The ten-second rule does not apply in our house. If it hits the floor, it's trash unless it can be cooked through (chicken poop on shoes...)
