Are chicks feet supposed to look like this ?

my heat is constantly around 100 but they have plenty of room to move closer or farther if they need to so they don’t get too hot

Measurements? "Plenty of room" is pretty subjective.

I'd consider dropping the temperatures. I feel 100 is too hot even for newborns. Closer to 90 is probably better. The cooler zones should be around 80 or even less.

For the older ones (how old?) the temperature should be even lower.

Well it’s 5x9 , and there is almost 40 in there

I feel that 100 degrees in the very hottest place under a heat lamp should be fine, IF there is also plenty of space under 80 degrees, and of course the usual gradient as they move out from under the heat lamp. (This applies specifically to heat lamps. Other heating arrangements would be set up differently.)

If that's measured in feet, then I agree that should be enough space to brood 40 chicks for the first few weeks.

What is the temperature in the cool part of the pen?
