Are chicks supposed to act like this?

What a relief! I bought some chick starter, it has 18% protein and amprolium to prevent coccidiosis. Once I put some in the dish, they went crazy to eat. I forgot to buy a thermometer but question, can I turn off the heat lamp from time to time if I stick my hands in the brooder to feel if it’s hot enough? I also switched into a bigger box and used newspaper as the bedding. If I turn off the lamp, I’ll make sure to keep and eye on the brooder if it gets too cold.
Great news --- hopefully they grow up healthily!

I can’t get them to stop going to sleep on the food. Here’s a picture of them...

That box doesn't look like it's any bigger than the other box, and again it looks like they're way on the other side from the light, as far away as they can get, which is a sign that they are still too hot and not able to get away from the heat source when they need to.

Can you go to Walmart and buy a storage tub? Preferably one that is at least two feet long and at least a foot wide? Bigger being better.

Got back home. The 2 Ameraucanas are so scared of the other 2 chicks (Silver laced Wyandotte and Amber white). They’re eating but not drinking the water even though I showed them by dipping their heads. I hope the box is big enough since it’s the biggest I can find. On the right side is where the heat lamp will shine which is the hot side and the left side is cooler. Anyway to get the 2 Ameraucanas to drink? The other 2 are acting fine and very energetic.
