Hi everybody:frow,
I am planning on getting chicks in April and I REALLY want a rooster.
1) because they are gorgeous
2) I need a good lookout since I have seen hawks and eagles around here
3) I want to breed my own chicks
Buuuuuut I have nearby neighbors. As I do not want to disturb them I thought of buying a Crow Collar. I read they hinder the rooster's ability to crow but do not irritate or hurt them in any way? Since roos were created to crow and the information might be wrong I'm asking you chicken experts what you think:D:D

I just came across this thread, I was looking for help because I just found out that my beloved "pullet" is actually a rooster. I live in suburbs and cant have a rooster but we're already so attached. Have you tried the collar yet?? What do you think, how's it going?

I am just asking questions till then:D

If you want a rooster and don't want to bother your neighbors, get a bantam rooster. They sound like squeaky toys and the sound doesn't carry as well. My bantam Cochin/Chocolate Orp cockerel has the cutest little crow I ever heard.

This is a Great idea!!!!! are all bantams like this or is there specific breeds? and are there any bantam breeds that are easy to sex as chicks? also will a bantam rooster breed with medium hens?

I only have experience with my little bantams, so I can't say for sure that all of them are less noisy.

This is the tricky part, most hatcheries won't sex bantams (too small to sex easily). I don't know if there are any autosexing bantam breeds or if they intentionally make bantam sex links.

A bantam rooster can breed medium to large hens, but it is less effective because he may not be able to get "positioned" correctly. But they try their darnedest.

Thanks!
