are ducks worth keeping?

i live up north here is Canada where we can get pretty cold -45C the odd days not including the wind chill. i plan on insulating the coop well and locking them in on really cold days, or should i let them have a choice of going outside of really cold days? and should i give artificial light to them if it gets so cold because i know its a lot of work to lay an egg (in my books it says that)?

thank you.

Absolutely get some ducks! May I prefer Pekins? I have liked them over the other 6-7 breeds we have had! And they are beautiful! They also lay alot of eggs!! I would keep a drake and hens!

@duluthralphie will agree with me on this. He absolutely LOVES ducks!

Ducks dont need much warmth in the winter. They are very well insulated. I live in MN and mine still swim when its 10 below! I would let them have access to the outdoors in the winter. If the coop is well insulated I dont think they need a light as they will give off plenty of heat to warm the coop.

It actually depends on several factors including breed of duck and climate. I raise Muscovies, which tend to be seasonal layers - they generally start in spring and may stop in fall/winter. My adult scovies are also molting (and some are broody), so that is likely contributing to the break in laying, too. This breed is arguably one of the finest meat breeds - it resembles lean roast beef - so many people raise them primarily for meat. Their eggs, while not as plentiful as other breeds', are delicious. And they are great foragers with lots of personality!
