Are first eggs always small?

Our eggs have all been roughly the same size since she started laying, and we've had just over a dozen now and they're not getting bigger at all. They are all between 48 - 54 grams in weight which seems an OK size to me, so does this mean they will probably stay that size or is the increase more gradual than that? (She's an Australorp).

Oh wow! That's kinda neat then, as we thought the eggs were a lovely size to begin with.

Can't wait to find three in the nest box one morning.... so far only the one girl is laying.

Are you sure she's the only one that's laying???

Absolutely! Up until this week she's been the only one with really red comb and wattles, the only one who crouches for me, and the only one who has made the "egg song" (although that was only fior her first egg - since then she lays as quiet as a mouse and we have to guess when the egg is there). We have one who looks close and I expect her to start laying this week hopefully. The third still looks too immature to start yet, although all three were supposedly the same age when I got them.

Oh - maybe I worded the original post wrong? So far we only get the one egg per day.... but I'm really looking forward to the day when we get one from each chook. Until then, I'm still having to supplement with bought eggs. *sigh*

FIRST EGGS! Well, I just found 7 eggs mid morning. I found them outside the coop and in the yard close to our fence line. I am going to try all the tricks I learned on BYC to see if I can get them to start to lay them in their nesting boxes. I think they actually stated laying a couple days ago, but I didn't find them until today. Do you think all the eggs are still good to eat. Was a bit hot yesterday. I know of only one that was for sure layed today. Lucy and Ethel are both Plymouth Barred Rock hens and are the only two hens of age to lay that I have, so maybe they started laying a couple days ago, since I found 7. Organic feed from day one and now free range all day. I am hoping for some tasty eggs. As you can see in just 3 days or so the eggs already have grown in size. the largest one in the picture was layed today. Just thought I would share my first time experience. Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
