Are Lily of the Valley Toxic to Chickens?

My hen got out and I caught her eating lily of the valley leaves. I thought lilies were toxic to most animals. She seems to be fine but I'm worried. It's been about 20 minutes.

One of my hens stopped eating for two days & looked very sluggish.

We noticed that some rhubarb leaves had fallen over onto the run wire & had been pecked.

As i said she was poorly for two days but is fine now.

Rhubarb leaves are poisonous for sure but she seemed to handle it.

I hope your hen is ok

All parts of Lily of the Valley are poisonous. I'd keep a close eye on her. I am actually really surprised she ate it. Chickens will generally stay away from toxic plants. I am sorry to say that there is not much you are going to be able to do for her if she ingested a toxic amount of the plant. If it were my bird, I may try to get her to ingest some activated charcoal, but I can't say that she will be overly cooperative with that. Maybe charcoal disguised in some yogurt? Are you sure she actually ate it? Chickens may peck and pick at something just to test it, but not actually ingest any of it.

Following up on this old thread.
Our hens seem to love lily of the valley leaves. They suddenly started devastating all the lily plants in the garden two weeks ago. I was concerned, but since there was nothing that I could do, I just hoped that they wouldn't eat something toxic to them.
They really loved the leaves. Some of the plants are eaten to the ground. We only have two hens, and they've eaten about 40 plants over two weeks.

I haven't noticed anything wrong with the hens. They seem to have stopped eating the leaves now, so maybe they found out they didn't like them after all. ;]

I'm glad this thread was reactivated. I have some Lily of the Valley in my yard. I've tried to remove as much as possible, but it's impossible to get rid of all of it. Now I won't worry as much.

My chickens ate every lily leaf they could find! I wish they would eat the roots too! Are the eggs safe to eat?
