We have an ameraucana that hasen't laid in about a week. She wasn't acting egg bound but this morning she finally laid but it was slightly lopsided. Is she okay 1st off and if so is the egg safe to eat? We're pretty new to the backyard chickens. Thanks

it looks fine to me, but if you are worried, mark the egg and crack it into a separate bowl before you use it to make sure.

You can test eggs by putting them in cold water if they float they are not good to eat if they sink they are fine. You can test egg freshness this way also. You can look it up online if you like.i believe it's called the sink or float test. It really works! When you start getting a lot of eggs and if you question their freshness you can use this test as well. If the egg does not float but rises to a point it should be used soon.Hope this helps best wishes

I'm sure she will be fine. Just watch her next time she's due to lay to make sure she isn't having any trouble. If she is having trouble passing the egg you can give her a human calcium pill, something in the calcium helps them lay. You can also give her a relaxing warm bath and you can also lube her vent to help the egg pass. I keep on hand theracalcium which is a calcium glutenate injectable in case of binding. But a human calcium pill will do the same if your not familiar with giving injections. These things I mentioned can help a egg bound hen lay. Hopefully she won't have any problems with her next egg. Sometimes strange eggs happen and they are not usually anything to worry about. But since you mentioned she had trouble laying id just keep a eye on her when it's time for her next egg. Hope this helps and best wishes
