Are my barred rocks ready to go outside???

one thing I have learned.. and Im new at this.. I have 2 little flocks.. my first flock I got in march,.. it was cold and so I had their light on all day and night.. my sencd little flock i got when it was warmer and within a week or so it was too warm at night to leave their light on so off it went..

here is what I found.. with the light on all night they ate throught the night and took several naps night and day.. the 2nd group whos light was off slept all night and no or hardly any naps.. the Weight is the difference .and the rate they matured.. my first flock who ate all night grew faster and matured faster.. I lost less chicks in the first group than in the 2nd and I feel the feeding is the difference. so my next chicks I get if warm or hot .. I will put a reg low wat light bulb in for night time to encourage night time eating.. but puts off low heat...

good Luck )O(

I'm so excited reading all the great advice! My 5 baby girls arrived just hours ago and are eating, drinking and pooping in their outside "baby" home. We are in Maryland and it's been in the 90-100's for the last few weeks. I'm happy to know they should be fine outdoors. They are on the front porch. And my Golden Retriever D-O-G loves his new sisters!

Thanks for all the info. Mine hatched out 6 days ago. I moved them outside after 4 days as there were 33 chicks and 4 keets... way too many for my house. They are in a 12 X 12 shed. Our temps are around 95 during the day and 72 at night. I use a heat lamp at night in one corner. I unplugged the heat lamp when leaving for work. It was still in the 70's, but they seemed fine.

I was worried about it being too hot and limited air flow. The shed has a screen door, but wondered about leaving a fan on low up high to move air around. Any thought?

I have my 6 week old chicks in a rabbit hutch outside, that i built an attached run on so they can enjoy the grass all day. They have been outside since hey were 3 weeks old, i got sick of the smell and chicken dust and it was warm enough for them already. The only reason they arent with the big gals/guys yet is because they are bantys so im waittin till they are about 2-2.5 months to put them in with them.

I believe you have your answer...

but I live in Colorado also, and recently put my 4 week olds (3 of them) in the coop in a cage with the older girls...they did great, feathered out and ready to go, now to integrate them all!

We have 80-90* here and 50*s at night....
