from your description the DE you are using is for organic gardening, I believe only the pool grade DE is harmful, so you should be fine.

Food-grade DE won't hurt your chickens, even if they eat bugs covered in it, or bugs that died from it, or eat a little DE themselves. DE kills bugs by sucking out the moisture through the bug's exoskeleton. It is mostly composed of silica, in the form of fossilized algae (diatoms), and contains nothing toxic. It is even added by some people to their poultry feed to deworm them. Of course, if you reach for the DE bag & grab the Sevin dust bag instead, then you would have a problem.
