Are Ohio Beauties Extinct?

It would be interesting to see a picture-- If they are listed in that Breed/ Variety list under other large fowl, does that mean they are their own breed?

I bet there is some Amish community in Ohio that still has these birds. A fellow around here got some Dominiques from the Amish that were some of the best I'd seen.

I e-mailed an Ag professor at OSU and here is what I got back:
Hi Christina,
I hear you are looking for Ohio Beauty Chickens.
You may be able to find them at Meyer's Hatchery in Ohio. Bill Karcher (Eagle Nest Poultry) said they look a bit like a Columbian Rock, and are really a crossbred.

Hope this helps.

Hope this helps!

My dad specifically asked me to research these to find them for our flock. Can't find anything.... He did however state that he specifically remembers getting them from an Amish farm in Kidron, Ohio. Hope this helps and happy hunting!

I don't know if this helps any or not, but is it possible the name Ohio Beauty could have been a local name for a breed commonaly known as the Erminette? Below is an old picture of an Erminette.

From what I can gather, this breed was semi-popular from the middle 1800's till the 1940's and then began a rapid decline. While it was thought to be extinct, Ron Nelson had located a remnant flock from an elderly lady in southern Wisconsin. Unfortunately little was shared about this woman before Ron's death and little is known about where Ron's extensive rare breeds ended up after his death. Anyway, does this look familiar to you or your father?

My dad says yes.. it looks alot like an Ohio Beauty but he said he remembers them having a collar of striped feathers on their necks? I am Going to look more into this Erminette? Breed

Oh, you could also try the Society for the Preservation of Poultry Antiquities. Check out their website and you can get contact information. They are an organization focused on the history off all the breeds in the nation. They may have some information for you about the Ohio Beauty and how it appeared.......
