Are people really this ignorant about chicken biology?

Thin skinned for sure. I'm amazed at how many people complain because they have taken offense at something that wasn't even directed at them.

While it is sometimes surprising to find out what people don't know, I think it's great that they ask, that they have the desire to learn. There's a lot about chickens I still don't know, and I'm glad to be able to come here and ask. I've learned a lot from this thread too.

When we first got our chickens my BIL wanted me to make good and sure that our kids knew where a chicken egg comes from. I said well of course they do. He wanted to make sure they exactly what part of a chicken they came from because he ex-wife had no clue till he brought her home one day and they had to get eggs from the coop. Once she figured out where they came from she was sick and she's never been able to eat an egg since. He asked her where she thought eggs came from and she said the store. I have no clue how she thought they got to the store.

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :

...she wanted hatching eggs, as in eggs that are hatching within the next two days!!

If I express ship them from AK to WV, would they be ok???

To my credit, I did not laugh until I hung up the phone.

I offered a drake plus hatching eggs on a community email list and got a reply like this;
Not sure what a drake is but it's just a duck, isn't it? About the eggs - do we just keep them warm until they hatch?

Thanks on clearing that up! When I first saw it, all I could come up with was Personal Computer, and I just couldn't make any sense of it. Just goes to show you how far my thinking goes, to the object right in front of me!

I never thought of the word "stupid" to describe anyone who didn't know the fertilized egg thing--actually, I never thought about it at all. However, I was truly astounded when I read about it as it just never ocurred to me that someone would not know.

And, I can honestly say I have no idea how I learned about it but it seems I "always" knew how chicken eggs were fertilized. I was NEVER exposed to chickens or any kind of farming in my childhood, so that's definately not it.

My guess is that I must have read it "somewhere" as I read anything I can get my hands on. This reading obsession has been going on for years, ever since I was a child. I was actually excited when I could take a trip to the library and read encyclopedias for hours! Can you imagine a child doing this?

And I feel I have learned A LOT because of it. I am so convinced of this that if someone asked me, I would say that "READING" and/or "English" (if that is your language) are the most important subjects in school.

So now I divide my time on the computer between BYC and Wikipedia, as both sites are fantastic learning centers. Some things never change!

When it comes to animals and our food supply in general, you would be amazed at what a large percentage of the population knows little or nothing about it. We have moved a long ways from our agriculture roots and such information that we consider common knowledge is really common to a small portion of the population.

Interests in technology and computers has replaced basic biology, art, and social studies. The majority of people can use a computer, yet cannot tell you the capitol of their neighboring state or what is produced in their own state. Most have no idea where their food comes from or how it is grown, processed etc...

We are the new minority folks!

WOW people! This was a pretty long and convoluted thread. There are a lot of people, myself included, who are pretty ignorant of the reproductive system of a rooster. I knew he doesn't mate with the eggs, but now I am going to research and learn exactly how he fertilizes the hens.

I think the main problem is with the written word it is too easy to give offense. People cannot see your facial expression or hear your laughter (be it kind or condescending) as you are typing away, so if you playfully call someone "stupid" they don't realize you're not serious. Even with the smilies, words don't show emotion so you have to be very careful. Even so, there will always be someone out there who will take your words the wrong way and run with them.

I'm finished preaching now. I love all of you crazy chicken people and am learning so many new things!!! Yes, I can call you crazy chicken people because I'm one, too!
