Are people really this ignorant about chicken biology?

Thin skinned for sure. I'm amazed at how many people complain because they have taken offense at something that wasn't even directed at them.

SOmething that is inherently offensive does not have to be directed at me for me to find it offensive. Rude is rude, no matter who you are aiming it at.

To quote Ronald Reagan, "There you go again." I'm sorry to tell you that this thread isn't about you. It's not about your personal dislike of the word "stupid" and it isn't about how the rest of us need to give in to your opinion. You have stated how you feel many times. Perhaps it's time to give it a rest. This is how the thread was highjacked the first time around.

You are being thin-skinned and PC. You even got the moderator to change the title to satisfy you. Give it a rest. If you are offended, quit reading the posts. It isn't up to you to re-educate the rest of us to meet your standards of rudeness or word usage.

Come back flaming if you want, but I am not the only one who feels this way as you can tell by reading the previous posts. You took the fun out of this topic the first time around and you're trying to do it again.

Clearly I touched a nerve. You are right. Anyone who doesn't know what you know is stupid. I apologize for thinking otherwise.

The topic of eggs and the treatment of hens came up in one of my college classes last semester and a guy asked how they treated the roosters that were with the hens.

Turns out he thought a hen couldn't lay an egg without first mating with a rooster. The whole class, especially the teacher, tried explaining to him about it and he still didn't get it. He finally asked "well then, if hens can lay eggs without mating, how come women have to have sex before they have a period?".

He also thought that all eggs had chicks inside, no matter how small. And all womens' periods had babies in them. He didn't understand why vegetarians could eat eggs and why some people are against abortion when the "body does it naturally".

I guess this guy had no clue! The class was in histeria!!! Poor guy... I felt terrible for him afterwards, he must've been embarrassed!

he must've been embarrassed!

Well, I should hope so! Sometimes, though, stupid (oops, I mean ignorant) people don't get embarrassed, they get aggressive instead when things are pointed out to them. You have to give the guy credit for continuing and getting it all straight in his head, even after others started laughing at him.

I was one of "ignorant" people until last year. I take offense to this post, as I too thought they fertilized the egg in the same manner that fish do. Not everyone was "blessed" enough to be around farm animals. Instead of calling people ignorant or laughing at them, don't you think it would be wiser to educate? I am sure there are some things that we "ignorant" people know that you are unaware of, yet I don't think I would laugh or call you ignorant

If you reread my post, I think you will see that I was giving the guy credit for putting himself in a position to be educated, even in the face of the laughter that came his way. I was trying to say that he had guts, not that he was stupid.

I'll have to work on my writing skills. I didn't mean to offend you, PattiXmas.

I recently had to explain to a friend that chickens lay different colors or eggs, some white, some brown (or etc.) just depending on what breed of chicken it is....

He thought that the typical white eggs in the store had been bleached or something to make them white.... That all eggs were brown, like farm eggs, but the white ones at the store had had something done to them.

I'm intrigued by how long this has gone on. There has to be some deep psychology behind that. All the finger pointing and tattling over who is stupid, who isn't, or how someone "meant" what they said... or another that took offense at it.

But psychology aside, as I scan the comments from the past 12-14 pages, I'm left with the simply pragmatic question: Where have all the adults gone?

P.S. - It must be a rather interesting challenge to be a BYC moderator

Wow. So not only did this guy skip biology, he skipped sex ed as well? He must not have done very well in high school.

Aristotle thought that the entire baby was inside the sperm (well, inside the seminal fluid), just very small, and when a man and woman have sex the man deposits the baby into the woman where it grows-- that the woman doesn't contribute anything besides basically just being an incubator. But you know, Aristotle had an excuse! Nobody was teaching public school biology back then....

(I'm not going to comment on the "ignorant" vs. "stupid" thing, except to say that while I recognize the difference between the words I often use them interchangeably, and am not offended by either. I don't mind saying that I used to be stupid about some things, and am stupid about some things now. But YMMV.)
