I have a Buff orpington who has been laying for a fews weeks now,i've watched her lay so i know the non speckled light brown are hers. I also have a white leghorn who has just started laying in the last few days. I know its her because the new eggs are white. I also have a black Australorp and Rhode Island red. i just got a light brown egg with darker speckles on it. so im not sure if its the RR or Australorp egg or if it's the orpingtons. Can the orpingtons have speckled eggs or is it more likely one of the other birds egg? i'll try to post pics...thanks!

I have three RIRs and three PRs and every now and then I do get an egg with dark brown specks on it but they're only on the rounded end.
ETA- I do know that it's one of the RIRs doing it though.

white speckles or dark speckles... my girls when they were first laying.. a couple of them had white speckled eggs and it was excess calcium.. after a few eggs the speckles went away.. too bad.. they were really pretty..

the one on the right RR? one on left is orpington

My RIR lays an egg with some dark speckles on it. She can lay just a solid brown too but most of the time there are some speckles in it so I know it's from her.

They can be. My RIRs give me all kinds of variations. Sometimes solid light brown, some with liver colored specks and some with purple specks. I have one that lays flashed ones and some that have different colored sections. I believe calcium intake, diet and the bird itself and how it processes decides what you will come out with. Every bird I think has their own style,my BRs all lay different shades of pinkish white to light tan and get a speckled one from time to time. Got one with purple specks today. So to say for sure whats going come out with certainty is anybodys guess. Although certain shapes can be consistant. I have a couple that I know which girl lays them based on shape.

so has anyone had a buff orpington who layed an egg with dark speckels on it?
I would just like to know which birds are laying. I know for fact that 2 are laying. If its the RR thats stared laying too then it would figure that she lays the day my orpington doesn't which is why im confused. if there had been 3 eggs then i would know the speckled was the RR

Oooh, I love speckled eggs! We have an olive egger that lays pretty green eggs that sometimes are light brown-speckled. I get excited when we get a speckled egg from her. Poor little girl is molting right now, though, and isn't laying.

Only 2 of my 3 Buffs are laying(still waiting on the third) and the eggs are quite uniform in color so far. My earliest layer is still laying smaller eggs but working on the size but the color is a pinkish brown and not a speck on it. My other one is laying bigger eggs is more dark pinkish than brown and one egg had a couple faint specks on the bottom but otherwise mainly uniform in color.
