Are self blue and lavender basically just two different names for the same color? And are there any breeds that have a self blue/lavender variety recognized by the APA? Somene asked what their bird was on Facebook and it was very obviously a blue Cochin. He insisted it was a black cochin that was not show quality since it wasn’t “true blue” then he posted a picture of a self blue Cochin and said that’s what true blue is. Self blue breeds true but it is not true blue correct? A true blue bird would be a black bird with one dilution , am I correct? Any opinions or corrections are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

As of 2015 APA recognise lavender for Old English Game, D'uccle, D'anver and booted. Blue is widely recognised. Though many new things like Blue Copper Marans are not.

You are correct that lavender is self blue and breeds true.

Blue as stated is a diluter of black. Two copies of the gene makes splash, one copy blue. Statistically a blue on blue produces 50% blue, 25% splash and 25% black offspring.

Self blue and lavender are exactly the same thing.
Lavender is the name given to the gene involved.
Self blue is the name given to the color by the APA.
Not sure what breeds the APA recognise in that variety but any they do recognise will be labeled self blue.
APA and their serious members are dead set against the term lavender used.
The rest of the world quite frequently use the term lavender for that color so that's where the confusion comes from.
No comment on "true blue" since different people use the term for different things.
Side note.....like every other subject facebook is the place to go to get the most ignorant advice and incorrect information.
Ditch facebook and spend more time on BYC. :D

Thank you all for the input! I always take advice given on Facebook with a grain of salt ;) anyone can be anyone if they want to be on there! Lol

Well, anyone can be anyone they want to be on here as well. But the more experienced members of BYC will pounce on the misinformation, in most cases.
