We have 2 Americana and 2 Speckled Sussex chicks all about 3 to 7 days old. The Americana seem to be natural leaders and the Sussex seems to be (for lack of a better term) derpy. Very sweet and I love them but every time someone is peeping because they are lost and chilly it's the Sussex. Mind you, the mama hen heat plate is no more than a foot away and all the other chicks are calling the stray to the fold from the warmth of that heat plate and the Sussex is looking around like a lost kid at the mall and crying. As soon as she pops under the heat plate she's fine and quiets right down. They both do this cute fast spin when they get lost, but again, only the Sussex chicks. They just seem slower to figure things out and kinda giddy.

So opinions, Sussex chicks Derp or no?

Mine are 3 weeks old now and I have to say I love them. Natasha is our smallest but she was first to learn the Treat call and is the most curious and bravest. She's also the only one to figure out how to get out of her leg band. Her big sister, Cleo is nearly as brave and smart. Maybe I got lucky :).

I have an adult hen and she is very sweet. She never picks on the younger smaller girls but doesn’t get bullied. She follows me everywhere, telling me about everything that has happened during the day. She lays a pink egg about 5 days a week.

Hmm, my SS does the same spinning thing and has done that since she was a chick. She's not just derpy though, she's actually special needs. Hopefully yours will turn out to be just a little weird and not in need of special care like mine.

We only have one and I’m not sure. I was pretty sure she was derpy when we first brought her home and she went around pecking all of the other chicks in the eyeballs over and over. This earned her the name Frieda, from OTNB. She is strangely much smaller than all of the other chicks her age and her favorite companion is a large, dopey meat bird named Mater. She doesn’t really stand out very much. I wish I had a few more because I do think they’re beautiful.

My Sussex would always wonder where everyone went when they were under the heater. I kept having to show her where they were. They are super sweet and cuddly and mine is my favorite chicken, but I'm worried she's actually a rooster (since she's getting her comb early) and ill lose her.

My "Ameracauna" is my boldest also. She's always ready to go exploring and hard to keep her in the brooder when the lid is off. So it sounds like we have similar chickens all around.

I am trying this breed this year have 15 arriving in Aug. will let you know. I got my normal barred rocks they are my go to breed. I love to try new breeds when I can.
