are there preventative measures for "pasty butt" and at what age does

Pasty butt - YUCK! I remember that!

I know this isn't helpful to the OP, but as an interesting side note, I've never seen a broody-hen-raised-chick have pasty butt. Never. That's just one more reason that I leave brooding chicks to the professionals: my army of broody hens!
 
I had 28 chicks and two cases of pasty butt the first two days. I started grit (sand) and no more pasty butt. I don't know if grit had anything to do with it or not. I did not feed any supplements or treats for a couple of weeks. When they are outside with Mama, they get grit and supplements.

I have heard that keeping the brooder too warm will encourage pasty butt.
