Are there "silent" rooster breeds?

Like said, silent, non-crowing roosters either just randomly happen with whatever breed and you have a pretty laid-back quiet male, or some breeds are slightly less "manly" than others, but so far no actual strain that is gauranteed quiet. Oriental Gamefowl can often be very, very quiet and rarely crow for their first year, and that's where it ends. Their crow is very deep though, which isn't as annoying and more of an enjoyment to hear, like a dinosaur in some, but it is still a crow.

we should get to work on producing one .more and more urban chicken keepers would love to have a roo. I'll bet changing an ordinance would take more effort and time than breeding a silent crower - or maybe a short crow barely distinguishable from a dominant hen crow would be enough. The Hens across the street wake me more often than my own serama roo does. I don't think of him as quiet either. I guess you would need to keep them around for a year or more though to know how the crow develops. that's a lot of roosters. Any ideas on noting a loud mouth when he's a chick so he could be culled?

I don't think I will chance it then, I live in a subdivision with a neighborhood association. I can see one person hearing a crow and turning me in. And I would never do throat surgery on a bird just because it is convenient for me. Thanks for everyone's input!

I would love to have a Roo. I'm thinking that I have hatched one see my posts under chicken photos of this forum - its a gold laced orpington! Hoping its not a roo. but at 3 weeks old, i'm finding it hard not to see a Roo!!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but so far my rooster hasn't shown any interest in crowing. He is a Rhode Island Red and just turned 7 months. He is showing all the other instincts of beings the head of the flock, protecting his hens courageously from hawks and other potential predators. Always sleeps outside the coop and nervously cackles when I just come by to check at them at night. He waits for every hen to eat before he does. And he is mating. He respects me, but if anyone dares to enter the run, he starts to peck them.

If he keeps this up, he'll be around for a long long time :)

Yes, the one on your grill. Just kidding. Get the no crow Collar, which is some collar you can now purchase at the hatcheries that is supposed to silence roosters...you can add a bow tie if you want for an extra fee. It's on Amazon too...called the No Crow Collar. There's a YouTube Video of it in operation, lolol.

Here's an interactive tool that let's you select temperment of chickens as well as foraging, heat/cold tolerance, broodiness, egg size/color, etc. If you download the catalog which you can read online pdf, you can probably get info. I read the customer reviews of the roosters to hear about how they behave before I take the plunge. It's called the CHICK SELECTOR and I love playing with it! https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html

There is a No Crow Collar out now you can purchase.

Also, there's a tool called the Chick Selector where you can select temperament and other features you like and also read customer reviews of roosters.
