Would tail feathers be a sign yet cause few of them have longer feathers that stick out more than others

I don't think so at that age. Sometimes they have suspicious looking tail feathers but they're still molting. They could fall out and not return. But I've only raised a Black Australorp cockerel. His sickles are just now evident, at 14 weeks, though his hackles have been noticeable since 12 weeks. My Barred Rocks were slower growing though. And I'm new, so you must take that into consideration ;-)

I can't tell from these pictures but male Barred Rocks are usually lighter in color overall. Your female will look like she has more black.
