those are Cornish X chickens. the brown spotting comes through sometimes.
i am not being snarky when i say the next sentence, but it will appear that way. (just so y'all know i say it with kindness)
i will never buy chicks at a grain/feed store, TSC etc. they can be handled by anyone with only God knows what on their hands etc, they get switched out of bins, employees may not have any real knowledge etc.
sorry for your negative experience. their growth looks excellent and the feathering is very good for Cornish X, do whatever you are doing now and keep it up. leave them on starter and you'll be okay. LOTS of water for these guys.
Well, looks like you guys confirmed what I suspected. The feed store will be getting three chickens back tomorrow.. guess I should prepare for the battle of making them take them back!!
The problem with all this is that I wanted BOs for their personality and I wanted HENS because I want eggs. I'm not going to try to mess with eating them or anything. The feed store will take them back due to them being seriously NOT the buff orpingtons I was sold (nevermind the fact that I got two roosters out of three chicks). I understand that it's hard to sex chicks sometimes, but I paid extra for hens!
yes, I definitely wouldn't go by crowing... one of my boys started crowing at 8 weeks and I was told that was extremely early. Like Miss Jayne says... you shouldn't expect crowing until more like 15 weeks, I believe. Sorry you got two boys of the wrong breed...
