Hello,
I've lurked over the forum off and on whenever I had questions about chickens and often found answers, for which I am truly grateful for the wealth of knowledge here. Today I am requesting help with the possible identification of my four favorite girls. I've never bought chicks without knowing what they were beforehand before, but last February I started up a new flock for the third time (invariably we move and I have to disband my flock
). I bought these girls as 4 week old pullets in March because my feedstore seemed to have difficulty in getting the leghorns I had originally requested and I wanted some layers sooner rather later. They were listed as Hatchery Choice, and the feedstore was betting on Speckled Sussex. It was apparent early on that they definitely were not. My conclusion is that they might be Partridge Rocks, but their feathers do not match some of the pictures I have seen, but are the closest I can identify. It has been suggested that maybe they are Welsummers, but their legs don't seem to be yellow enough, and are more of a greyish-yellow with more grey on the claw. These are the most lovely birds I've ever had in a flock, both in temperament and beauty (I adore the feather patterning). They might not be as wildly colorful as some I've had in the past, but the simplicity in their coloring is appealing to me. The black in their feathers has a green sheen in the sunlight, and they are not presently laying, either, though I expect the first pullet eggs any day now.
So in closing, I am wondering what you all might think. Partridge Rock? Welsummer? Something else?
Thanks in advance for any clues, would like to enter them in our fair but have no clue where they fit.
