Here on BYC, the term "production red" is used loosely. Maybe even incorrectly. However, few photos of RIR's put up look even close to the deep, mahogany red, with glossy color, and brick body shape that an RIR should have. Granted, few of the hatchery birds, or any breed, look like their SOP, but the birds sold as RIR just plain stick out like a sore thumb. Heck, I'm not the APA breed police, but it's gotten to the place where just about any orange or rusty colored bird is called a RIR.
I like production reds. Seriously, I do. I own some. Fine birds and most are GREAT layers. It's just that they hardly resemble what an RIR should be.
