I have 3 10 week old turkeys. One Royal Palm girl, one Grey Slate boy and one Narragansett boy. Today they boys locked beaks. They have been huffing and puffing around each other for a while now and the bounce off each other. This behavior has been going on for several weeks but they always end up walking off and later sitting happily together. Today's beak locking was very unusual. I separated them but they still wanted to go at each other. Now they are on the same perch happy again. The instigator seems to be the Slate. Will they grow out of this? Will they hurt each other? Should I worry?

Some get started with the practice sparring pretty early on. By 4 months they can get pretty intense and will settle on which is boss bird. However, having several toms, I've observed that alliances are formed and betrayed; the depressed loser (top of head dragging the ground, moping by self) one day is only taking the time to plot a successful revenge. Only two? That shouldn't be too much of a problem. It might get a bit bloody when they seriously go to `shooting the red' but these trilling, neck wrapping knock-down-drag-outs have never resulted in any permanent damage, here (though they've sometimes extended all night). Not saying they can't kill one another but it is pretty rare.
