Are they too dumb to get out of the rain? Pecking the air?

It was raining steady yesterday. I've covered part of the run with a tarp, and they have their coop. But here are the girls wandering around in the rain, feathers soaked. Also, I've noticed them, on dry days, walking around and pecking at the air like shadow boxing (not pecking at gnats either).

Nope, they're not dumb, just a lot better equipped by nature than we are. They already have their coats on, and can play in the rain all they want. Only silly featherless humans have to run inside.

As far as pecking the air, they're probably chasing flies of some sort. Their eyesight is much better than ours, and they can see the tiniest (possibly edible) details.

Rain or shine, my chickens are always wandering around. They could care less if their whole back is soaked when it's raining as long they're able to forage. I probably wouldn't care either if there were tasty plants and bugs waiting for me to find(rain is good for chickens because the earthworms come out of hiding!)!

My chickens love the rain. The Silkies usually look like drowned rats after a good rain lol.

not too dumb to get out of the rain - smart enough to know that a little rain won't hurt them! rain brings out all the easy snacks - worms come out of the ground, all the flying insects seek shelter under leaves. less chasing!
