I know these ladies are still a little early for egg-laying (they are 17 weeks) but I am wondering if they are getting closer? The SLW and Australorp seem to be getting quite red in the face although wattles and comb are still quite small. My Dom and others have nothing! No pink or comb/wattles -- does this mean they are still a ways off? Any prediction on when the SLW and BA may start -- are we getting close (fingers crossed --pretty please!!!) Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Looks to me like the Dom is just a bit behind the others. My SLW started at just over 19 weeks, along with my SS. I think one or two of my Australorps started at 20 weeks; not positive where those darker eggs are coming from but the Australrops are checking out the boxes when I'm in there.

Pretty birds, and sweet looking dog! My dogs mix with the chickens, too, but they don't guard them, they ignore them. They do seem to keep the fox etc. off the property, though.

Wow--what breed--SLW?-- is that black & white one on top? I am not up with my abbreviated chicken names yet! Her feathers are gorgeous.

And Im right there with ya--my 2 girls are about 18 weeks and one is getting larger redder wattles but the other not so much. I can't wait to get my first egg!!

SLW = Silver Laced Wyandotte. Thanks for the compliment I'll pass it along to her

ddawn -- Glad to hear your SLW started at 19 weeks-- gives me hope that it's just around the corner for her!

I love your picture. My hens are young too. I have a black hen that looks like yours. I was told mine was a Maran, but I don't know. What kind is your black one? My chickens have just started to lay eggs. They are about 20 weeks old.
Your dog is adorable, too!
