I took a chemistry class in college on how the test for HIV was created and works. With any biological disease test like that you can never make it perfect so you have to decide if you are going to create a test that has some false positives or some false negatives. If you have false positives some people will be told they are sick that aren't and when more test are done will learn they are healthy. False negatives and people who are very sick will never know.

I always think about that idea when I read or hear people discussing government programs. Our system is flawed and needs serious work. But in order to improve the system I think we need to increase the thoughtfulness of our discourse and stop spreading propaganda that the majority of people on welfare are abusers who want to maintain this fun and free lifestyle. The numbers show that this is not the factual case in our country. Yes, there are people who abuse the system without a doubt and there will be people who abuse ANY system. That sucks and it's not fair. There are a lot of wealthy business owners who also abuse the system. (I think you could make the case that they perhaps have an overall greater impact)

I have lived right on the edge of south central Los Angeles for over 10 years now and before that I lived in a low income area of San Diego. I see a lof of food stamps and WIC and head starts and section eight housing and kids whose only meal is their subsidized school lunch. I know that not everyone using them is using them well. But, I also see a lot of people who are disenfranchised and are struggling and who are trying as hard as they can to give their kids a better life. I see people who work harder than I will ever work and will always have less than I have. That sucks and it's not fair.

I always vote for false positives. I would rather pay knowing that I am paying for some people to abuse the system than live in the sort of place that let's people drown. Let's discuss realistic ways to improve our programs rather than degrade the people who may need them because we could all need them at some point.

Between the tantrums I am seeing on face book with people cursing and unfriending each other, and the comments about doom on BYC over the election, I am going to re-post my response to some of these people from face book.

My goodness! The meltdowns some people are having over the election. Extremists on all sides drive me crazy. Who ever wins will not be the end of America as we know it, people! Every election it is the same thing. The extreme ten percent rant and rave about how the other side eats babies and wants to take away your rights/money/first born, while their own side smells like roses and are blessed by
what ever god the people they are pandering to worship.

Then some normally logical people fall in this trap, allowing themselves to be worked up and parrot the ramblings of political pundants who say the most inflammatory things possible to scare people into voting their way.

Then when a winner is declared, you get some people having tantrums as if the world will end. "Oh no! Other people have different opinions from me! And more people have a different opinion so my opinion is out voted! it must mean we will be doomed. doooooommmmeeeddd!"

Our diversity and ability to acknowledge and discuss our differences are part of what make this country great. It can be hard to remember that when faced with opinions we find abhorrent, but it is something we must all strive to remember. We need to stop thinking of the other said as automatically bad/stupid/ diabolical/completely wrong, and remember that their belief is as dear to them as yours is to you. They are not the "other" they are fellow imperfect struggling human beings striving to do what is right for them and theirs.

Let our differences not divide us, but unite us in celebration of the beauty of this country's diversity.

Good night everyone.

As I said earlier, reasonable people making reasonable arguments are wonderful. We can look at the same facts, numbers and policies, and yet come to very different conclusions. It is the people who gnash their teeth, cry foul, repeat rumors and hurl out overly dramatic emotional responses that are hard to deal with.

Either your guy won or not. The best thing to do is figure out why (the answer isn't because the other guy's folks are stupid) they won or lost, what it means to you and your side, and go on from there. Plan, think about what your core issues are, and go on....that is what makes the system work.

The stock market always takes a hit the day after election day. In 2008 it lost over 5%. It would have happened no matter who won. Even Ron Paul, rebel.
Day after election stock market takes a hit if it is not a republican who wins. It always drops and comes right back up when a democrat wins.
