Are you adding to your flock this spring?

Have added 12 barnyard mixes (from my flock) so far, 12 pekin duck eggs (from my flock) in the incubator, and plans to incubate 12 more eggs (likely chickens from my flock - more mutts!) every month thru Summer. With rolling cullings monthly, starting in April, most likely.

So, "adding and subtracting"? Though I expect to finish the year with more than I started the year, so also "Yes".

I’m also going to be adding and subtracting. The ratio right now in there is bad, 1:1. Thankfully most of those boys are still quite young so I’ve got a bit of time to work out who is going where and if I’m going to create a bachelor pad for them... everyone is getting along beautifully still, and I’m trying to decide which of the boys I want to use or if I want to set up some experimental breeding pens... planning on keeping a couple pullets from my hatches this year, if I get some nice Hedemora offspring; other than that no more chickens.
Ducks, however... :P
The runners are going to their new home in the spring, and I’m going to keep my magpie drake with my appleyard and appleyard/runner crosses. Also ordering more appleyard and magpie ducklings, so I can set up breeding pens for both next year. I want at least a trio of each breed, trying to arrange for sexed ducklings, and I’ll add one of my crossbred girls to each group as well.
And I’ve got 2 separate lines of snowy calls to cross this year too. :) the one little girl is just stunning so I’m hopeful for some nice babies out of her.

Yay for chick season!! 🐥 🐣

Yep I want to get up to 20 hens. I have 15 now with 1 rooster. I’m hoping to offset things like broody girls and molting. Since I do have the 1 rooster I’m going to see if all this can happen naturally. With a couple BOs and 5 BAs, a broody hen should not be a problem. Any extra Roos grow up and go to freezer camp.

I feel that pain. Another Drake is going as soon as there is room in the freezer, that will leave me one drake, three hens of the adults, and I'm only keeping the hens of the current hatch (assuming any successfully incubate - I've had terrible experience with incubating duck eggs).

On the chicken side, I've one Roo and 21 pullets - a different sort of problem. Plus the 12 unsexed hatchlings. Building a second house and run, plans to substantially alter the ratio. :)

Very best to you in your efforts! May we all find success this season.
