Ok, I have refrained from posting my opinion till now. Here is my stance on the subject. I do believe that there are people out there that either get overwhelmed do to an outside factor and need someone to step in or are hoarding (another example of needing help) or are just irresponsible and should not have animals to begin with. I agree that the animals in those situations do need help.

However, just reading the article doesn't make me believe that's what's going on. There seem to be many missing facts and evidence. I'm sorry, but the way the media loves to show off "deplorable" conditions in situations like this it surprises me that there aren't more photos of the conditions. The media is notorious for slanting the facts one direction or another. That is not to say that something may not have been right at this person's residence but it seems a little suspicious that there's a new hotline and the very first call is for this? The media also likes to throw around the word "hoarder" whenever a large number of animals is involved. That is simply not accurate all the time. Breeders frequently have large numbers of animals at one time.

As to the dead rabbits, not only did they not give a specific number but they neglected to say if they were adults or kits which makes a huge difference as rabbits are known to loose kits. There was mention at one point that she had culls in her freezer going to a zoo I believe and it is entirely possible those are the dead rabbits they were referring to.

There also seem to be a few people who are bothered by the lack of a breeder's license. While that is worrisome that she did not follow the rules, her website states that she has been breeding rabbits since 1982. That is a long enough time that it is entirely possible the laws changed after she had been breeding for a while. She may not have known the law changed or because her business started before the law was written, she may have been grandfathered in and wasn't required to have one. We simply do not know.

I believe what Redeyre was intending when she started this thread was to make people aware of situations like this. She is a responsible breeder of some amazing dogs and I can see how something like this would be very scary for her. People get confused about what it takes to develop a specific line of any kind of animal so having large numbers sometimes looks like a red flag.

For those of you that don't understand why anyone is defending this woman, please remain open-minded to the fact that the media excels at sensationalism and half-truth reporting. Also, a lot of people seem to be nit-picking her housing/watering setup. As with any animal, there are a lot of opinions as to how said animal should be kept. Many horse/barn owners have to post disclaimers like "my barn, my rules" because if they don't, they will hear about it from everywhere how they are doing such and such wrong and need to change. The same is true for any breeding situation. Without seeing detailed pictures of her setup, everyone is just speculating as to what is going on. Debiraymond knows her through a friend but that's the closest anyone is for getting any additional information - this woman is not able to defend herself here so please try to remain impartial until more information/facts are available.

Absolutely 100% correct!

My first thought after seeing the few video clips and seeing all the comments from people supporting the breeder, was that this is a huge case of this new hotline tryin to get some publicity so people will call them to report. Funny that the first thing to come through the hotline is about 200 rabbits....

I immediately thought, "This poor woman. She's been breeding these rabbits and developing a line for 20 something years and it's all going to go down the drain because the temps were a measly 4 degrees above ideal, and some idiot disconnected the hose to her auto-waterers, and the floor was a mess from a storm the day before.

Absolutely rediculous. And the rabbits I saw in the clips looked fine to me.

How many times have those of us with chickens talked about how hot it was and the chickens are panting, etc? We do what we can. I can't afford to just run out and buy a huge fan and other expensive equipment to make sure they stay at the exact temperature they'll be comfortable at. As long as they're surviving and I provide food and water and do what I can as far as the heat (A shade cloth over the top of the run and wetting down the run to cool off the dirt) they should mind their own business.

As for whoever it was that said, "200 and rabbits and a few were dead, that happens....are you kidding me??" How many of us have 200 plus chickens and go out every now and then and find a dead chick? It happens. It may have had something wrong with it, it may just not have had the will to live, we may have been treating it for an illness doing what we could but it couldn't be saved. Are they doing any testing on the dead animals to find out if they had an illness and if it had any medications in it's system to show that she was trying to do something for it? Are they going to said zoo to inquire if they got rabbits from her?

There's way too much information not being told. And from what i've seen of the news and things, if the conditions really were that horrible they sure would've shown pictures, guaranteed! So if the animals they showed were the worst they had then those rabbits are perfectly fine! Leave em alone....

If the place actually was a mess and looked bad there would be tons of pictures. If there were actually dead animals laying every where (not specially prepared and in the freezer) there would be pictures every where. The anti animal people would be all over it taking pictures to shove in the rest of our faces, just to say "see see we told you". 84* in the barn is NICE compared to 100*+ temps outside.

No pictures, no video, no proof, no solid evidence, its just hearsay at this point on the rescuers half. Moving rabbits in this heat, changing their food, heck even really changing the water is enough to stress them out and make them sick. They better sure hope that they can afford to retain a good lawyer, but considering they are begging for donations just to feed the rabbits, well LOL on them.

I hope you didn't take my comment to mean I was demanding more info Debi, I was just trying to make a point that people were getting a little aggressive in their responses and she's not able to defend herself is all.

So email the link from byc to her. I am sure someone has already. It should be nice to hear the op's point of view also. I don't like it when people post such hot subjects and just sit back and not say anything. This is not the first time I have seen this happen on this forum either, lots of members do it.

Not at all. I would like an update to share with this group. She hasn't answered me, though a bunch of others in CO have! LOL! I want to hear from HER because knows the lady personally.

Another response:

So. It sounds to me like a major railroading here. And my friend has been encouraged to join BYC and post here for all of us to keep up with. I hope she does, since is knows the gal and is there in the same city.
