Are you Prepared?

WhisperingWinds..there has been a good bit of discussion of canned meat in the What are you canning thread..Frugal has wonderful tips!! I can quite a bit of meat/stock..follow the BBB.

I am not sure how long you could store grains etc. in the glass jars but I keep some things now and I add a bay leaf on top..keeps weevils out..just remember to remove it before using. I also keep my flour (I buy by 50# bags) in 5 gal food grade buckets with the bay leaves on top.

I thought of the bay leaf this week-end, when I was obsessing about this. . .I have a tendency to think things to the death before acting. Not everything, but something like this is critical to survival possibly and there is no sense doing it if you don't do it right . . .the buckets are a great idea, they are air tight . . .I have glass pickle jars my son and his family save for me, and they are great for pastas and beans and stuff . . . .I will check out the canning thread!! We don't eat beef, but I dearly love pork and chicken.

I'm not prepared at all...

I'm in city limits, but I have a key to a bug out location I can reach within 30 minutes, natrual creek runs thru it. Always 3/4ths or more in the tank, 10 gals of spare fuel in the garage. A month of "appitizing" foods, and 3 monhs of MRE style "food" (if there's nothing, i'll eat it). Enough water purification tabs for 500 gals, rain barrel, access to firearms, and about 20 throwing daggers, fishing gear, a seed bank sealed.

For something small, like a quake, we could sit tight and bide time, for something epic... well we live far enough from LA to not be ground zero, and have a secluded cabin that's defendable and prepaired. Way I see it, my first obligation is to my kids, to get them secured and safe, I wouldn't refuse water to a thirsty child, buit I also wouldn't advertize that I can treat bathtubs of the stuff.

I just hope everyone in this thread has comprehensive home owner's insurance that covers both natural fires and home-started fires, as well as floods and other acts of god.

I think its the Mormon's who believe in having two years worth of supplies isn't it. I have to have a Mormon somewhere in my ancestry. When we were first married, something kept telling me to buy extra, buy extra and we were not rich, but I always bought three or four cans of stuff every week and had the freezer crammed full. Lo and behold DH got an appendicitis attack and was off of work with No income for 6 weeks! Saved our kadoodles.

Uh, Boyd? Can you tell us your address again?
I have a case of Coke from September 2001, and I'm thinkin' it may not be too tasty right about now.

Those of you truly looking at real life emergency preparedness, go to www.cookingtf.com, and look in the forum section under said topic.
I am prepping to actually start teaching how to prepare the home for anything, how to do proper food storage, (store what you eat, eat what you store, and do not stock up on just beans and rice) for our food co-op.
Kerry Ann covers the topics of bug out bags, and what to have copies of as well.
Its very detailed, and easy to do. Even on a tight budget.

It is never a good idea to sit backa nd say that it will never happen here, and that if it does, the government will take care of us.
That is why countries get into so much trouble in a disastor.
Be prepared, and do not sit back and complain about not getting help.
