Are you Prepared?

Prepared....well better than some, less so than others.
Planning the garden for vegetables that store well but also want to do some canning. Have two apple trees planted and hope to plant at least a couple more this spring.
We have a big pantry, I put things aside that wont really go bad, even if its just one thing a week.
I try to keep water on hand in case the electricity goes out or something.
Talking about cisterns, I didnt see it, but did anyone mention rain barrels? They might be a good thing.
We live close to the river so water wouldnt be as huge a problem as some places. However its not exactly CLEAN water.(I suppose I should invest in some of those tablet things...)

You start with a 30 day supply, then move on to 60, until you have 12 months stocked up.
But!!! It must be diverse foods.
If you have a death in the family, or a natural disastor, one of the worst things you can do to your body, is feed it only rice and beans.

And, you have to rotate your stock every month.
Store what you eat, and eat what you store.

the thing with meds is..most insurance companies wont fill a script until right before its due...
So how can you stockpile meds?

Learn all about healing what ails you, naturally.
It can be done.
For major stuff, if you are able to keep back a dose per week, that might be one way.
Just make sure and rotate so you are not hanging on to old meds.

I have most everything short of food in my car for survival as well. The only thing I need to add is a blanket and I would like to get a little pack of granola bars or something with a bit of substance.

Things I have right now are flares, a tool box, self powered flashlights, matches, lighters, a mini generator with a light and an air compressor, among other things for car emergencies like salt and fix a flat. As for personal care stuff, I have an entire first aid kit complete with everything from bandages, stethoscopes, burn sheets, BP cuffs, scissors, pens and paper, extra water, juices, and even a BVM. I'm an EMT and I use the bag for this, but it would come in very handy if I was to get in a sticky situation myself. I would also like to add in some extra clothes and a few other odds and ends. If I had to, I could probably live pretty well out of my car if I had to! I also usually keep it pretty full with gas and that baby will run for hundreds of miles without needing to be refilled.

Other things I just remembered are spare winter things, like gloves and ear covers. I don't always remember to bring gloves with me and the last thing I want to get caught doing is having to change a tire in the dead of winter without gloves!

Unfortunately my meds can only be kept for a short time before they expire. I don't think there are any natural ways to manage diabetes (insulin dependent anyways), but people do live for quite awhile without insulin. It's just a very uncomfortable existence. Worse comes to worse, I figure I'll have a degree in Biology with research experience. I'd find a few pigs myself and experiment to find some insulin! (Actually, laboratory synthesis of human insulin is a very easy procedure. You just need to introduce the gene for producing insulin into a bacteria genome and they will begin to produce it)

I'm on lisiniprole (spelling?) for my BP. Doc gives me a scrip for 3months at a time. Ooops, when I was in next month I asked him to write me another scrip because I lost the last one... Now I have 6 months on hand almost all the time. I could naturally bring it down with willow bark n Nettle tea, but lets be honest, that stuff tastes like doody.

Handy tip for long term storage of dry goods..... 5 gal buckets for sure, bay leaves on top of product.... but before you even put it in the bucket, put it in your freezer for a couple days. If there are any eggs at all in the grain, rice or flour, the freezing will kill them. Then pour into your 5 gal buckets, o2 absorbers (those chemical hand warmers basically) and bay leaves. You have dry goods that are now able to be stored for YEARS... Just don't forget to buy more and rotate out the old.

Since I live in a state where I am never farther than walking distance from any source of running water, I'll stock up on a few gallons of bleach. Only a dropper or two is all it takes to purify water. It's good for sanitizing medical equipment needed in emergency situations.

My bug out location is also our pleasure cabin. it is 5 hours straight north. With one tank of gas I can load up me the wife, our 7 kids and grand baby, two dogs, two chickens and about 5' of the van left open in the back for enough supplies.

How many of you have TP in your preps? It's the little things that folks forget

Prettiest frog- I don't know what the law is in every state, but we are required by law to cover homeowners insurance. Flood is optional since I am not in a location that is considered a flood plain.

my dh is insulin dependant as well.
Insulin does have a good shelf life if kept cold.
One can reduce the amount needed, by eating a good amount of Cinnimon with each meal.
We have experimented with it, when he has run out and the pharmecies are closed.

In Canada, they have been able to cure Tye 1 by the use of Capsicum injected to the pancreas.
They have figured out why it shuts down, and how to shock it back into working again.

We use cloth, ie. "family cloth".
No smell, I promise, and no extra laundry work either, as it takes up very little space.
Its no different then washing underwear.

Problem solved.
Works very well for those off grid as well.
