Are you Pro-Gun because of predators?

Yes I am pro-gun because of predators, and two footed kind that decides to harm my family. However, I live in the city so I can not simply shoot anything that comes in my yard. Even the city cop said I have that right to shoot predators that come into my yard that is killing the chickens but people, no. Unless your life is in danger and you must shoot to KILL, not cripple. The court is funny about that because criminals can have more rights than the victims and if you shoot one in the knee, you would be sued for attempted manslaughter, pay for his hospitalization, therapies, etc. I don't like Illinois law.

The only `incivility' that is being dealt with, for purpose of your brief, is that of the dog owner. Any response to that owner, whether a courtesy or a summons/fine, by the individual who retired the dog from the target pool, is purely optional. Around here, since the road's been paved, a loose dog is nothing more than road kill waiting to happen (having put down two in the ditches along our property I know this drill) and I'm doing a community service by putting them down humanely, unlike the owners who put them in the ditch by letting them run. The onus is on the owner of the animal that they let run. Usually, around here, it is from some silly, sentimental, misplaced, pastoralist fanatasy - `it's the country, the dogs run free!' Yeah, they pack up and chase the deer into our fences/pond, harass the wild turkey hens, etc. I couldn't care less about the owner's `state of mind' and don't have time to commisserate with the vermin (if on the owner's property I'd call it a good dog). Civility extended to those who trigger the incivility can't be desired/expected/demanded. They are lucky to get a bill for the bullets, from me (closest thing to an animal control `tax' around here).

OP's Q: Not pro or anti `gun' - It is a useful tool. If not available I'd default to my grandfather's methods (Middle TN during depression - didn't have to worry about usual preds eating chooks as everyone was pretty much eating those as well) and use the ax and bow saw to constuct deadfalls for the dogs.

It isn't the only "incivility' in this equation, but I heartily agree it is hugely uncivil! No argument from me there.

I am going to disagree with the comment about SSS though

. We have gone through 6, yes 6 years of hell over a dog and its still alive!! Neighbor stole our dog and we took it back( long story, but he was supposed to bring the dog to visit his friend). He wouldn't give him back so we took it, then returned him to the breeder(he was a hunting dog with strong drive but dh didn't hunt rabbit, and he was bored not working). Anyway, this man vandalized us and tormented our children for 3 yrs until he tried running my kids over. Still an ongoing problem as he is unstable. If we just said "what dog? You lost the dog???" We would have saved ourselves tons of grief, money, trouble...

... so if the time ever comes for us to SSS, you bet your sweet grit we will say "what dog?"

BTW, dh and I aren't rednecks

we are city folk who moved to the country to raise their kids

.

If the everyday Joe acted mature, rational and sane then I would have no problem explaining my actions BUT the huge majority will want and think they are entitled to revenge and will act upon that. Whether you have the legal right to shoot won't matter, they will retaliate and unless you video tape it good luck getting the police or anyone else to help you...

It is the rare story that you would hear of someone saying "you shot my dog, I KNOW I WAS WRONG in letting him run loose and it is ALL MY FAULT" . Reality is, " YOU SHOT MY DOG, MY KIDS PET, YOU WILL PAY!" OR "YOU BETTER WATCH YOUR BACK AND YOUR OWN DOG, HE BETTER NOT COME NEAR THE PROPERTY LINE! or the one I got while walking my other dog on her leash" IF I EVER SEE THAT DOG I'M GONNA SHOOT IT! and I swear he muttered something about shooting me too as he drove away. Yeah, honesty is a great thing

Are you saying that the Maine prosecutor's office has refused to step in on an attempted murder of children??????

Thing is an "anti gun" sort is sure happy to see a "pro gun" sort when their or someone they love lives are in danger or their livestock is being killed....

Just saying

i am very pro-protective housing but honestly the housing is on my land. your dogs do not belong on my land tormenting my livestock. so i am very pro-sss. i am also a redneck southerner who keeps his guns loaded at all times.

True that, and just to be clear, I am NOT anti-gun. Not at all! However, I'm anti-using the gun indiscriminately, and I'm anti-SSS.

Been there, done that. Small town/county politics can be very "unethical" at times. Could be no action taken by the authorities due to family relationship with the perpetrators. Or in one case I know of no action was taken because the place was supposedly under surveillance awaiting a bigger bust (which never happened). It's unfortunate, but in some rural environments, if you aren't related or rich or politically connected nothing will get done and you may start receiving negative consequences from the authorities in a strictly unofficial fashion for "irritating" them with complaints.

The dog can't tell the difference between your livestock and wild animals. They are dogs.

My dog knows the difference. We use him for hunting pheasants. He knows that he's allowed to point and flush a pheasant. He knows he's allowed to retrieve the pheasant after it's down. He also knows that he's not allowed to bother my chickens. He doesn't touch them, ever. He's 8 years old and we've NEVER had an issue with him and the chickens.
