Are You Stocking Up On Food?

Being in California, the threat of hurricanes and tornado are pretty limited, but we do think about the obvious earthquakes.

How many could live in their coop should their house fall down? Would not be super comfortable for long, but we can do it. Next thing we build, a garden tool shed, will also be built with that "what if the house fell down" thought in mind.

Hehe, our coop is only "just" big enough for the chickens. We do have a nice big garden shed though...we'd have to empty it out but there'd be room to use it for shelter if we had to. Interesting...I never thought about that...of course we don't get many earthquakes up this far north in Colorado.

My chicken coop was built to be used as a garden shed should the time ever come when I don't have chickens anymore ... or, if my house should ever be sold, it's another option for interested parties looking to buy.

Hadn't thought about the temporary accommodation angle. It's equiped with electricity and water caught in a rain barrel. Hmmm ....

Speaking of people who are planning for The Apocalypse, my friend who built my chicken house, built a shelter for his neighbor. The darn thing is under the garage and has a hidden door behind a pantry shelf in the house that leads to a tunnel for access. It has steel doors lined with Kevlar so it's bullet proof. However, a large vehicle could drive through it.

The neighbor lives in FL and this is their summer house. They also bought a used Wells Fargo truck to transport themselves up here in case all Hades breaks loose and there's rioting in the streets.

It cost $80,000.

I guess it takes all kinds.

We try and keep at least 6 months of food stored back. There probably is more than that if we eat frugally.

We haven't gotten our half a beef yet, but with what's left from last year and all the fish we've put in the freezer lately, we'd be ok on meat for a long while. If the power is out to long (over a week), I can start canning up the meat on the propane stove outside. We have a good generator that will take care of the freezer and fridge for a while.

I don't keep enough water stored, usually only 15 gallons since I can't stand the iron taste of our water so we buy it 5 gallons at a time. I have no problems with going out and getting water out of the stream or pond, filtering it and then boiling. I'd prefer to collect rainwater, but it's been dry. The dogs drink out of the pond all the time, and I'd haul water for the chickens.

I only have a max of 3 months supply of chicken or dog food on hand at a time. I don't want the food to stale.

The day China stops buying US bonds and dumps those they now hold will be the end of the US dollar. It will happen fast and furious. If the US cannot rollover its debt, the government will go to the printing presses to solve the problem. That means a massive inflation. No matter how much money they drop into those food stamp accounts, the recipients will not be able to buy anything.

Those people will not be denied. Anarchy will result. They will kill and plunder anyone they can just to stay alive. It will be a tough time to be sitting on a years supply of anything. Be discrete and very careful where you throw your empty cans.

Inflation leads to hyper inflation, and eventually all currency is worthless. We can learn a lot from the German inflation of 1923, Zimbabwe, Argentina, Mexico. Also, we can learn a lot about the Warsaw Ghetto, the sieges of Stalingrad and Leningrad. People can do some really awful things when they get hungry.

Those having their years supply may find that confiscated by the government. It looks like we will be in for some tough times.

Prediction: The war against Iran will start just after the last ballot is cast in the US presidential election. Whoever is elected will just have to deal with the problem.

Any time you want to know what will happen, all you need to do is look at history an see what has happened...

I do agree with JD though that I believe china has pretty much stopped buying bonds. How long the government can sell the "business as usual, nothing to see here" line is the question.

No kidding Reb. Right now the stock market is not performance driven but inflation driven. When small capitol investors figure this out the crap will hit the fan there. Large cap investors will have gotten the he%% out of Dodge before this happens leaving the little guy holding the bag.

Well, I am blessed to live in a tiny community of paranoid people! It's just me, my husband, the dog and the birds at our house, but all with-in a mile of my driveway, I have my mom and my brother and sister and their families. We all prep and each take different tasks, depending on space. Like I have enough water to last all 11 of us at least 6 months. Also, we have other family and friends in the area that prep, so we plan on shutting off the outside world and making a go of it, all on our own.
