Here is my opinion on that video. I have watched it and others like it many times (every time someone post it on here). Every chick you see in those looks exactly the same. I have not once seen a black, blue, red, whatever chick rolling and tumbling along in one of these. This leads me to believe these are factory farm birds headed to big commercial houses. I do not believe the babies we buy for our backyard flocks are treated the same. They have to be vent sexed, they are hatched in MUCH smaller numbers. So, while I am not fond of the things I DO contribute to when I buy hatchery chicks, I don't believe it is what we saw in this video.

i think the broken shell/chick separator was the scariest thing ever. Sheesh.

luvmychicksnkids is right, these are probably production leghorns on their way to the big egg and meat facilities where they never see the light of day or know of any other kind of life at all.

Holy Crap!
I wonder if there is any other animal that could survive being treated like that in such numbers. I didn't know that the shell was broken to treat for Mereks. Everyone is soooooo careful about their eggs. It would appear that you could just toss them from a USPS truck, NO PROBLEM.

I don't know if you all have seen the chick sexing segment on "Dirty Jobs", but they were not terribly gentle with the chicks either.

They generally tossed them from tub to tub as they sexed them, and the vaccination device for Marek's looked positively medieval.

I think it goes back to the Red Jungle Fowl. Chicks have to be tough to survive.

Oh and if I recall correctly, the voice over in that video we are discussing said they were commercial egg layers.

I would reserve most of your pity for the male birds that disappear off the screen on that OTHER conveyor belt... Sad but necessary I suppose...
