are your dogs and chicken friends

My Chihuahua was raised first as a city dog. She was an adult when I got her and was an only pet for years. She and the chickens just don't mix. On the other hand, my Livestock Guardian Dogs, the Mastiffs were raised with all my animals and do great with my chickens. So, my 150 pound dogs are trusted with the chickens, it's the 13 pound dog that isn't allowed anywhere near them. On rare occasions the Mastiffs will hold the Chihuahua down with one paw and bark for me if someone lets her out. But, at this point, I don't let her out, she has a coyote proof run and she can get outside with her doggie door, she doesn't try to get out to the rest of the farm. It's always an adventure here!!

My dog and chickens get along fine!!!! My chickens free range and when I let my dog out, she didn't care. At first, my dog would go up to them and the chickens would peck her nose. Chockens will get aggressive if they are threatened. Don't worry.

Hope I helped!!!!!

My dogs and chickens are fine together as well but it took a little conditioning at first.

I have well trained and mild mannered dogs. The chickens? Well they pretty much rule the back yard, or so they thought.

At first, a couple of the chickens CHASED my mild mannered dogs!

To my shame, one of my dogs is a Sheltie who has good herding blood on his pappy's side, and he RAN from the chickens in total fear. (Grand-pappy on the Isle is rolling in his grave.) We had to feed him treats with the chickens to get him not to be afraid of them.

The other, a Lab, wasn't worried at all by them.

The hens...well that was a different story. A couple would chase the dogs with evil intent. However, as we trained the dogs to relax around the chickens and stand their ground, the chickens relaxed too. Everyone is pretty calm now.

Now one of the chickens (a younger pullet who was hatched on our property) and the Sheltie have started a little "chase" game...I know it is a game as neither one is serious in any way, and my dog has his little play stance. (Don't worry I'm watching as I know how things could escalate...but believe me they are playing....just like the dogs play chase with the cat in the house...first it is the dogs chasing the cat...then they turn and the cat chases the dogs.)

It's pretty funny to watch.

I have an olde english bulldogge. Bella is so good with the girls. She gaurds them against anything that dares to come into my fenced back yard. The chooks are not afraid of her one bit. In fact the RIR runs right to Bella when i let them out. The divine ms B required no training at all. She thought the chooks were hers from day one.

No but my outdoor cats have an understanding with the chickens when it rains they sleep in the coops with the chickens and also sometimes they sleep next to the hens whilst laying and the cats keep the snakes and small rodents away. I feed eggs to the cats sometimes so they get along fairly well.

My old Aussie is hysterical to watch. My chickens and ducks are all free roaming around the yard and he follows them around and "herds" them to fresh scratching and keeps everyone together. If any of the chickens get too far away from the bulk of the group he quickly brings them back. He came from a shorthorn ranch in South Dakota and this is his first "herd" that belongs all to him so I am sure he is very proud of his work.
