are your dogs and chicken friends

We have been very lucky with out dogs... the old black lab doesn't mind the birds at all and pretty much treats them as part of the yard (maybe figures they are just funny looking cats? LOL)
Our English Shepherd has been great with them... Mindy is totally infactuated with the birds and has been since the first time she was ever near a bird. Her day revolves around getting to go do chicken things or spend time in the yard with them, she is now a very happy puppy since we set up a brooder in the house for some little ones... she gets to watch birds inside and outside!
I even have videos of our last batch of chicks (hatched by a broody hen) crawling on and around her when they were babies. They still love to roost on her back as soon as she goes into the coop.
a favorite summer hang out with a couple of the roos.
Mindy and one of the roos inspecting coop construction progress.
Providing a soft, warm spot for the youngsters.

You guys are all so lucky. The first week I got chickens my dog busted through the fence and killed 3 of them. Lucky I was there or he would have killed them all. I thought chicken wire would work but obviously not. So I upgraded my fence and don't let my dog near the chickens anymore. Too bad.

My dog was VERY interested at first, but she listens to me so well that she never took a bite. We started off with chicks which I think helped her realize that they were part of the family.

After a little while, she wanted to play with them...but the chickens showed no interest! Now the chicken don't fizz her at all, doesn't pay attention to them. She does however LOVE chicken poop!

This isnt chicken-dog related but i thought id share. :)
One day, I was outside feeding my flock and he ran off. When I called him, he didn't come which is unusual for him. I walked around the house and he was in the garden. As soon as he saw me he made a noise I've never heard a dog make before, kind of a yelp and whine mixed. He picked something up very slowly and walked over to me. In his mouth was a bunny, whose eyes were barely opened. I picked it up and it seemed to be okay. Russell (my dog) cried again and walked back to the garden. The mom was completely ripped apart and stiff, so I presumed it was from the night before, and all her babies were gone except 2. I took the other one and showed them to my mom. There was a boy and a girl. Sadly the girl didn't make it but the boy recovered completely and I was able to let him go a few weeks later. :) my dog has such a kind heart.
He's very sweet with the baby chickens too.

Love these photos!!! What a fun dog!

my lab loves my chickens:)

ETA: Roxy (the dog) is a hunting dog, and is used to retrieving ducks and geese throughout the fall. She just knows what kinda birds she can touch and birds that she can't touch.

Dogs, cats and chickens get along at our farm :) Kitty "Cash" hatching something.....probably and evil plan! "Roxie" our aussie and "Ingrid" the swedish flower hen frequently nap together in the sunshine. The hens will walk all over Roxie while she is laying on her bed sleeping. For some reason, they love to go inside her kennel and hang out....? Angela www.naturallyequine.org
That one made me laugh out loud. Find the kitty....

We are trying to help our 2 dogs (a Boston Terrier & a French Bulldog) become friends with our flock. Both girs chase them. The Boston will stop when we yell. The Frenchie on the other hand, she is too dumb. She wants to kill. This thread is encouraging. . to see the success of others.

a video of Mindy watching the babies... we were incredibly lucky that our broody hen, Gracie, didn't mind her being around the little ones. She would let them all around Mindy without fuss but don't let another hen even get close to her area! She would charge them in a second! LOL

All of our chickens seem to love digging at the hair on Mindy's tail, thankfully she tolerates it without a fuss. When they get near her face she turns her head away usually, she's been on the receiving end of quite a few curiosity type pecks and knows to avoid staring chickens!

Beau- at 6 months old. He was already guarding the babies. He doesn't have a chicken buddy per say. He just sits atop that mound and watches over them. Hawks dont even fly over if hes out anymore. He loves to inspect the eggs each day.
