For the OP, I did piano (decently) and sax (badly), for a long time. I don't know if it helped me with learning, but I am good with science and math! I kinda liked it though, even if I wasn't very good. The only real song I can play still on the piano is Chariots of Fire heh.
Forcing yourself to suck at something really isn't the best way to get out of it, it just shows folks you suck at it. Some will view that as either a) you're lazy or b) you need more training. I don't think it sounds like you want either of these applied to you
Ask you folks if you can do a different instrument if it's the music they want you to learn, or a different activity, if that is what their goal is.
