Holy cow... that's some serious composting!

The guy on CL that makes them said (I emailed him a while back) that he cements 4x4 posts into the ground and uses rebar to string the barrel through. I don't know that I'd want 55gal barrels, but I'd go for two 10gal ones. I don't see any on CL though.

Gabby (was Clover but she talks so much we changed her name to Gabby!) is apparently a Gabriel. We had lots of crowing this am, and not by Elvis who was sleeping in the house! Anybody need an Ameracauna / Australorp mix that seems to be a roo? Or possibly a crowing hen? Compared to the other australorps the breeder had she looked girlie. I can't have that kind of crowing in my hood! Also can't start multiplying house roosters because I'll run out of cat carriers!
Anyway let me know!!!

I have sand on the bottom, topped by shavings and/or rice hulls. I kind of rotate between the two.

Compost needs air, and solid plastic will not allow that. Many of the local cities have used trash bins available for free or low cost. In some way or other the bin is broken and unusable for trash or recycle; they drill holes on hte sides to allow air to get in and circulate. They do hold an amazing amoutn of material, but I find them difficult to use doe to their size. When I did a wire mesh circle, it worked a lot better. I'd be very interesting in knowing more about the compost turners mentioned.

Anyway we checked yesterday for vitality and two eggs had spider veins, one of them large in size. I don't see much other than a yoke on the third but my son insists that there is indeed some faint spider veins. I'll give it a few more days, but how exciting to see them alive and one of them was moving, seems to soon in my opinion. I'll do a spot check on my Delawares soon just for come comfort in knowing there is something happening..
