Plus, one of my feed store hens hasn't laid more than 5 eggs in a YEAR. I am hoping (justifying) that with a few more birds, I can at least sell enough eggs to cover the feed.

RE the mealworms - Yes, they did give me the heebie jeebies, but I got over it, picked them up, even a handful at a time, no problem, put them in the bigger bin, all is well...until I went to make sure they weren't getting out of the bin. In the quiet I could hear the MUNCHING, ahhhhhuggggh! Now I am sure there are 5000 in my bathroom! I'll get over it.

Yeah, that sound is amazing isn't it?!! All those little mouths and little legs moving, body segments sliding over one another, it's quite a sound at it's own tiny volume.

I'm also thinking about selling my eggs to cover the cost of feed. I think it could be done here in Tucson pretty easily. We've been talking about selling our extra garden stuff at the local farmer's market and I think the eggs would go fast there too.

I must get mealworm colony going but I think mine will be on the back porch ... and a composter too (not on the porch)! It's not just chicken math that's a problem - it's all of the great ideas!

Just sent you an email about the grubs.

RE the eggs: Last year I was able to sell mine for $4/dozen at the CSA. I noticed at the Santa Cruz Farmers Market they are going for $3. Sell a dozen or two a week and the feed is paid for! Congrats on the garden abundance, too!

Oh, yes, watch out...I always wanted goats, but was able to contain the desire because I thought it was unrealistic..but in this group several people (at least) have goats...I want some! Now the composting and red worms, those I did before the AZ thread, but the mealworms!!?? My mother is visiting next week from Maine...how am I supposed to explain a box of writhing mealworms!!!

Editing to add: my mealworms are only in the bathroom for the night. Tomorrow they go on the porch!

My neighbors had two goats for a couple of years and then got rid of them. I loved hearing their sounds from over the wall. Between the goats and the chickens it was sounding like a farm around here.
