Arizona Chickens

Everyone should add one, and we could write a book - LOL!

There once was a Constance with worms.
Who oh so incredibly squirmed.
The sun did come out
And baked them: No Doubt.
And Constance had no more squirmed worms.

This is great!

Start with rubbermaid (or sterlite or whatever one you ike best). Use cage wire or hardware cloth to make a lid. As the birds get older, use 1/2 x 1 or 1x1 cage wire to make a cage. If the chicks are large fowl, you may be able to use 1x2 wire.

What would you recommend for the bedding? Some say sand, some say natural dirt, others think fine shavings. I can't decide.

Thanks for the offer of some worms. I "seeded" the bin with some from my smaller colony, who were fine, but in a slightly more sheltered location. Hopefully they take and I don't have a larger problem such as a pathogen of some sort.

The mealworms are doing great and pupating like crazy. I pulled out about 1000 grubs and put them in the fridge before they pupated. The ladies know the sound of the container opening and come running every time. It is so much fun!

If worms you're attempting to raise,
In sun don't allow them to braise,
Most will have died,
And you'll find they've been fried,
For the sun has searing hot rays.

Oh, that is harsh! But true...

you aren't the first one to lose something by neglect. I tend to lose plants, but I'm getting better. I find if I have more to keep track of I do better.
I agree with whomever it was that said you probably have viable eggs still in there too.

A chicken story on channel 15 right now

I didn't take it personally; I read it with a giggle! No, not the first, but a dumb thing to do anyway. I know better. As for plants, I can NOT keep house plants alive. They definitely die from neglect. I don't have that problem with the garden (or the vertebrate animals).

Hmm, I like the "more is better" philosophy...it leaves open room for more hens
