We had the same problem with our Kyle Coop. The roof was warping after just one rain. Also with the chipboard, lots of rain came through the back wall. So we had to re-nail sections down and then we put shingle paper down and shingles and painted the sides with exterior paint (even though I paid for it to be painted). Now it is all good, water tight, no more warping. Still it's a great coop, just wish he had not used chipboard.

Maybe he would make it with better wood if you offered to pay more for it?
It also helps to put a roof on it. My sister found a couple pieces of corrugated stuff on Craigslist for cheap.

Didn't know better at the time! New chicken brain. Still, it is a relatively inexpensive solution, and hey buyer beware right? I'm sure Kyle would build to suit, he seems a perfectly pleasant man. Upgrades coming!

We have 7 eggs left in the bator and peep!peep! tap-tap=tap. The bluest of the eggs is peeping! And rocking!
Yes I'm sti;; doing coffee, but DD will be texting continuously!

Is there anything cuter than those? And Mama is looking a little worn by motherhood? Same thing happened to me.

Off to have coffee! A watched egg won't hatch any sooner. Good thing I have something else to do!

Hi all! I am trying to get caught up. It might take me a while. I need your help in the meantime. I had mentioned that we got 3 new Japanese bantams from pdx2phx Monday. They still haven't laid an egg yet, but they were in with our silkie. I know she is an egg eater, so we started putting her in a cage inside the coop during laying hours so we could be sure they weren't laying and her eating the eggs. When I came home yesterday and went to let her out of the cage, I found a half eaten and very soft, leather egg in her cage. It looked like a turtle egg. I took a picture, and will attach it here. I am just wondering if this is a fluke or an indication of a bigger problem. Is she an egg eater because she is lacking in something? Does this mean she is at risk for some other problems? Her egg eating is a real pain and it drives me nuts, but she is such a sweetie that we put up with it. Any advice would be appreciated!

I'm trying to get caught up too! Loved seeing the pictures of the Japanese with your daughters

I bet they're settling in still - all three were laying daily here, pretty pearly cream colored eggs. It figures that they would stop being broody since you were talking about giving them eggs

I hope your Silkie is ok! I am such a newbie, but maybe if her shells are that soft she needs more calcium?? I'm sure someone else on here will have better advice than me.....

Becky-- I am praying for you and your dad. I know this must be a very hard time for you.

Arizonadreamer-- I didn't know it was possible for a chicken to lay more than 1 egg in a day!

I put straw in my coops, but I bet the girls would love it if we threw in some hay. I might have to do that! I bet it is very good for them since we don't get too much grass in these here parts.

Meatybeaty-- Welcome!!

Thanks! We are thoroughly enjoying them. They seem very comfortable with us. The older girls love to go sit in the coop and hold them and talk to them. They are much less skittish now and they get along fairly well with the silkie. They peck her once in a while, but there is no fighting. YAY!! I haven't let them out yet since I haven't read up on wing clipping, but plan to soon. The coop they are in is plenty big. I think it would be fine for 8 standards, and we only have the 4 bantams in there, so waiting isn't such a bad thing for now. It might be good to wait until they are completely at home anyway.
