Arizona Chickens

If there are any southern AZ people who could help me with coop info regarding severe heat / monsoons / winter / predators..I posted in the coop forum. Trying to juggle all of those together..thank you

Tomorrow...another 8 errands (catching up) 2 doctor consults (for DD#2) set 36 eggs from Mahonri. Oh and I started our 1000 mealworm colony tonight! 4 little chickies, Emmy is ready to sell. She has early signs of chicken math. So I guess it IS contagous!

Well, I'm no expert but... lots of air, lots of shade, lots of fresh water, grass if possible, plenty of room for the lowest in the pecking order to get away. Nest boxes in the coolest darkest spot that you can still get eggs from. I'm going to put 16" clay pot saucers down to be refilled during the day. Got grapes started on the west side, sweet potatoes on the east side, putting insulation between the coop and the south wall to cut down heat (reflective side away from coop and they cannot get to it). We will see.

Yes they are frizzles. I have a little bit of everything and I love them all. I told hubby I don't know how many I have but I would know if one was missing. We go and watch them and it always puts us in a better mood, they are so funny. We have a couple of older black silkies who thought they were going to show them the business and who was going to run the roost but they gave up and now they all get along great.

That is so true about chickens putting me in a better mood....they are just so happy and excited! It's a good reminder to me to enjoy life in the present

well, it seems i have a problem. i have 11 seven week olds out in the grow out pen and last night i moved 2 five week old sex links out there with them. i had tried to put them all together when they were smaller, like 2 and 4 weeks, but it didn't work out, bigger ones were chasing the little ones and so forth. so the sex links have been in the garage in their own space this whole time. figured it was time to move out. this morning i woke up to them at 5am being in a corner somewhat bloody from being pecked, i put rooster booster on them to see if that would stop it, it smells awful, but they kept at it. the poor dears are back in the garage.

i also have a group of 7 one week olds and 2 two week olds i just put together this morning, living happily in harmony like peas and carrots.

I get a new thrill with every egg. And Ginger has been so friendly since she started laying. Every time I check for eggs she comes into the nesting box for a little petting and attention.
