That is rotten! What a stinker. Sorry you had to go through that, it must have been (and be) stressful. Certainly not good for neighborhood relations

RICE HULLS

Has anyone on the AZ thread tried them as bedding? I have read what other people on BYC have said, but I'd really like to hear it from the peeps I "know," and in our extreme environment.

Tanks I will keep that in mind. I will prob see if I can find some this weekend my wife and daughter are pretty excited.
thx

I agree with the automatic waters. Cant wait to do that.

If anyone is handy with a drill and interested PM me and I can explain how I make my own automatic waterers. Its pretty neat actually.

Hello stevensonm and

The easiest and quickest auto-waterer to make would be a 5 gal. bucket with poultry nipples installed in the bottom. I get mine at qcsupply: http://www.qcsupply.com/420011-push-in-style-nipple.html. All you need to do is drill the holes in the bottom, insert the rubber grommet and push hard on the nipple to seat it within the grommet. I'd use only about 2-3 nipples per bucket. Two would be easier if you place the bucket on a cement block. You can also hang it. You'll also want to drill a small (1/16") hole in the lid to prevent a vacuum from forming. I have a couple like this as well as one that is plumbed into our water supply. You can see both on my byc page. Good luck with your chicken preparations!

Neighbors are either a blessing or a curse. I am so glad you proved them wrong.

My fly problem has started in earnest. Unfortunately, this year it IS me. We let the weeds get too tall, and I couldnt find all the dog poop. Add that to a batch of non-stop turding meaties and I am fly central.

Not that I am alone in my neighborhood. EVERYONE has an aviary of some sort. My big complaint is the lady with the ducks and the stagnant water. I think my veryveryvery first BYC post was about her. Yesterday I realized someone has a full half-acre of peacock aviary. I haven't heard them squawk once.
...gonna go make nice nice and offer to hatch eggies for free. Shane says I can't have peafowl, but OH I want to hatch some.

Back to flies: I started battling the flies early this year, but a few days after I dried out the coop, it rained. And rained again. SO: Currently I have 6 fly traps in strategic places. Yesterday I mowed the lawn and today I spent all moring with a shovel, hacking at the weed bases. Tomorrow morning I am going to get all the poop, re-till the chicken run and meatie pen, and dump all the chicken poo/mulch into the "cooking" part of the garden.

...Asssuming the DH brings my wheelbarrow back. He stole it yesterday for a job, I havent seen it yet.

Constance made some really good points, though. Please don't sit in the corner--we like it when you keep things all stirred up--like for the Chicken Math tutorial we are (impatiently) waiting for.
