Arizona Chickens

Hmmmm - for us it's little inchworms (centimeter worms?) that grow into little moths, and really love the wheat bran we use for mealworm bedding. They don't seem to need oxygen, either - last fall I sealed 10# of bran in one of those huge Ziploc bags intended for clothing, and now there are moths aplenty.

You could try switching to slices of carrots or potatoes for moisture. Less sugar = less fruit flies.

If you put the bags of wheat bran in the freezer over night it will kill all of the moth larvae. They show up in big bags of parrot food too.

Pastrymama--I am so sorry you had to deal with that from your neighbor. That must be so frustrating. Reading your post and my trip to Tucson today made me thankful for living in the boonies. We have the only house on the street. We have bad flies once monsoon starts, but there is nobody to complain. I know the chicken coops contribute, but we have free range cattle here and there are cow pies all over the place. We would have bad flies with or without the chickens. What do y'all find most effective for keeping the fly population down? I have used those stinky bags, but I am open to suggestions for something better.

Nuclear Chickens--I saw baby turkeys at the feed store in Tucson today. They had them BOGO! I wasn't at all tempted. After seeing them at the fair, I am totally creeped out by the toms. The way they move the thing on top of thier beaks totally freaked me out. I had no idea they could do that. It looks like something from a sci fi movie.

Constance-- I know nothing at all about rice hulls. Today at AZ Feeds on 6th, I bought some Terramigo for the rabbit's litter box. He's outside in the bantam coop now, but I am still keeping him in the cage for now. He likes to use the litter box. He's great at it, so I will keep it up. When we got him, he came with cedar, but that isn't good for bunnies. I tried pine shavings, but it wasn't absorbant enough. I will let you know how this goes. It is bigger, so not so fluffy, and the lady there said it holds a lot.

tball chicky-- I am soooo sorry!

It is hard enough to deal with losing pets on your own, but so much worse to watch your kids deal with it.

Laree-- I voted for Patch, but it looks like you didn't even need my vote. YAY!!

Those were some neat pics, though I couldn't figure out why someone would submit that super blurry one.

Hello everyone! I have been away for a long time it seems. Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend.

All of our birds are doing great. All of the chickens are laying and all of the ducks are also.

My son is in preschool and when I walked in there yesterday I saw this tote on the teachers table. I look inside and guess what I see...One chirping frantically baby chick. I looed at the teacher and she said her cousin got all of the kids baby chicks for Easter.

Then to make matters worse she tells me she had three but by yesterday two had died. I then tried to nicely explain everything that they need and I think it really went in one ear and out the other. I came back when school was over and the chick was just non stop chirping. I told her she needed to put something in there with him and have food down. I picked up the chick and he stopped chirping and curled up in my hand. The teacher then said oh becareful it poops. Then she asked if I would take it when it got to big to keep in the class. I suggested that I could take it home during the night then bring it back in the mornings. The teacher said that was ok she is just going to keep it in the shoe box. I got together an old hampster cage and things to take to the class today and tell the teacher to put him in there. Hopefully sooner then later I can get this chick to my house.

I really don't understand why people really think it is a good idea to get baby chicks or ducks for Easter.

What else do I need I know I need pine shavings for bedding and the floor where can I get this. I need to get a light for the chicks and keep them seperate. R they ok outside now if not will they be ok in the Garage I have 2 indoor cats thatg would terrorize them in teh house.

i call all the feed stores near me but they dont
carry the mareks vaccine and in phoenix
rays feed store did not have any either
they only had new castle but the new castle
was enough for 1000 birds to much vaccine
guess what i found this morning in the turkey
coop baby turkeys

You have to order Marek's online. No one carries it.

The vaccine for 1000 birds for Newcastle is the only size anyone sells, except the larger sizes for production houses (who hold 250K birds in one building).
