Arizona Chickens

Yesterday I decided to catalog my chicks because I have sold some and bought some and then there was the "raven incident"

. Yikes! I have more than I thought

. I figured I had about 50 but I have 69 (seems like I should get one more and make it an even 70). They are finally at an age where I can tell my roosters from my pullets and most of those will be going into the freezer which will bring the number down to about half of that. I have some ladies from the office that want to buy some of my wyandotte pullets also which will also put a dent into the numbers. All this and I am still looking at other breeds wanting more. Guess I am a true chicken addict.

Oh, they have lots of free lumbar on craigslist right now if anyone needs some - even pretty large pieces. It's just in the for sale / free section.

When my chicks have been about two weeks old, I put a few handfuls of sand in their brooder and start giving them a small amount of greens every day. I have been giving them some sprouts from a seed mix that I use for my tortoises to graze on. The big chickens love them too, but they get a bigger variety of greens

ca--I really appreciate what you said about the vax. I agree. As parents, it is important that we question a whole lot of stuff, and not just do it because someone said so. Every organization bases its position on presuppositions and biases, which, unfortunately, often revolves around money more than the benefit of the individual. It is soooo hard to be sure you are doing the right thing. But, it is important that we care enough to research it and pray about it, and make an informed decision... or at least one that we feel at peace with. I completely understand the position of those that are thankful some good came from the lives of those aborted babies. Then again, if I am really seriously absolutely mean it pro-life, then my family shouldn't benefit from the murder of even one innocent child if we can help it. There is a whole, WHOLE lot of gray and what-ifs there, and that is why I said we each have to find the place that we feel at peace. I know that isn't the same for everyone, and totally respect it. All of that to say that I agree with you.

All parents need to realize that the decisions made (health, discipline, education, spirtual training, etc.) for a child are the ultimate responsibility of the parent and noone else.

azpenguin--I love the chicken tractor! Great job!!

Chicken math strikes again! That is hilarious!

Smiles-N-Sunshine (or anyone else that knows about rabbits)-- How can I get our bunny to stop peeing on my kids, short of freezer camp. Here is my conversation with my 5yo the other day:
Her: I am going to go in the house now and wash my shoe and my leg.
Me: What? Why is your shoe wet? And what is all over your leg???
Her: Oh, the rabbit just peed on me. I think I'll go wash it off now.

Then he did that again to my 12yo daughter. She was MUCH more dramatic about it. I'm sure you can imagine how that went. He is neutered. I thought the neutered ones aren't supposed to do that grody stuff????

Haha I tried to reply on my phone and ended up replying in the middle of the quote. Have to fix when I get on the computer! It's like hide and seek replying!

Looks very secure. I use wire grids (like you see for cubby shelves) and zip tie them together to form cages that are 2 squares tall. One is 4 squares by 4 squares and the other will be 3 squares by 5 squares (I still need to find another grid with small openings for the lower level). Then I make a top from a sheet of plywood. If we did nt have block fencing and a secure yard, it would be inadequate for safety, but they work well if enclosed in a secure space.

Here is an example of a cavy cage made with them from www.guineapigcages.com
