Arizona Chickens

Thank you SSilk. Gallo has the vines planted in the middle of the run so the canopy(?) shades them. I'm really liking that idea.

Do chickens eat whiteflies?

I had my son weld me an arbor that is attached to the barn, about 6+' above the ground, so the white flies are way out of reach of the birds, plus it is on the west side of the barn, so gets far too much sun to put birds there this time of year. The vines do give a lot of shade, but not really enough in the afternoons. Wintertime I do usually have some birds under the arbor, but not very much shade then, as grapes are deciduous.

That window sill is in your coop?! And it's painted?!

Wow...am I jealous. I don't have windows that nice in my house. From the picture, I thought you had them in your kitchen or something!

That must be a beautiful setup.

Yup...that's the coop.

here is another view of the window they were sitting on:

Found the windows on clearance @ Lowe's for $25 each and the screen door for $15.

Your coop is impossibly clean. Where in the world did you find poopless chickens???

Beautiful set up. I love it!!

I've been looking for the poopless chickens, too!! Since the Ladies free range all over our backyard, our patio, pool deck and sometimes our patio furniture can get pretty poopified. ugh.

I keep thinking....someday we will have a coop with a large free range area that is not the *entire* backyard......plus we could actually have living plants in the people zone, too!!! and a garden.

That's what I'm working on starting this morning. New coop is to be 8 Ft wide, one wall is the cinderblock fence. Coop and pen up to 26 feet wide (accommodating two mature trees), depending upon how far I get before DH catches on.

I figure it'll divide easily into two coops. One for adolescents, one for layers. I'll use the existing coop for a broody pen, grow out pen, or Seremas or bantams or whatever.

I'm bad.

Today I managed to clear out 8x8 section of rock. I may have to hire in some help.

I guess the jig is up on my "poopless chickens". I've taught them to clean up after themselves.

They are very bright ya know.

I try and clean every morning when I let them out to play in the grass before I get ready for work. Then it is back "Home" for the day. Otherwise I go out in the evening while they are once again let out to play before bedtime and I clean their room. I usually have someone inspecting my work. I just tell them that the maid is still working on it and come back in a few and then they can roost for the night.

Let me tell you that these girls can get pretty messy! If I can clean once a day then the "messy" isn't so bad. We have the poop boards just far enough away from the walls that they don't get messy. Our old coop wall was a disaster.

Thank you.

Her eyes were amazing - large and dark, ringed in kind of an amber color. She'd look right in your face and 'talk' or purr, and she wasn't just talking to herself like most of our others. She'd reply when we talked to her, and make noises back to us in similar tones to whatever we were saying. She was the one who never wanted to be with the other chickens...always followed us around and found ways to sneak into the house if she could. I miss her so much already!

She was a hatchery chick from Ideal, one of 3 Old English Game bantams (the other 2 were roos that we couldn't keep). We're already talking about trying to find some more OEG's, maybe locally. Does anyone raise them around here? I know we won't ever replace her, but the breed just seems amazing.

The roos we had were cool interesting clever dudes until they got all roo-ly
